I've done the "getbent axle mod" and think its the first mod that every one, even Nylint, should do to these crawlers when you first get 'em.
I'm not sure if its because of my 2.2's, 9.6v battery, driving stile or what but I still brake the axles. I do think that the front axles are not as strong as the rears just do to there design. Because I have 4WS I have two problematic front axles to deal with.

These are some of the other mods I've done to try and make the front axles bullet proof. Over time I will add to this thread as I do more mods to the axles.

More clicking in the front axle. There was just enough movement in the axle shaft to brake a few teeth off the white axle gear. The shim I used pushed the gear over far enough that it no longer sat in the right place to keep it from moving around. I replaced the gear with one from a rear axle. The center hole is a smaller diameter so it has to be drilled out to fit the front axles. I solved the slack by putting a brass collar/spacer on the white axle gear.

A kit would be nice. Call it the G-Bent 1/18 axle kit. I'll have to see what I've got and then I will let you know.

WOW! OK, OK, I can see there is quite the demand for a kit like this! I will let everyone know this week end if I will do it for sure.

Umm If I were you I'd take that to PM before you get yourself banned.

OK guys, I'll look into it over the week end. If I decide to do it I will find out what I have to do to let you all know so I don't get in trouble. If you have any more questions on the possibilitys of a kit please PM me.

I'll take two!!!! LOL, just kidding guys, glad to see the mod is working for Ya'll. Makes taking the time to write it up worth while! ;-)

BTW, thorn4run, just looked at your other thread and your rig looks great! Keep up the great work guys.

Thanks alot getbent for the coment. Coming from you it meens alot. Your name is famous when it comes to the best mod you can do to a 1/18th Nylint.

I did some shopping this week end and got most of the stuff I need and started making up a few kits today. I have a goal of improving "getbents" mod to make the axles bullet proof.

Its so cold outside I hooked up my onboard cam. to my 10.5" portable TV and did some crawling without even having to step outside so I got a little side tracked playing with it but I will work on the kits some more later. Heres a few pics to enjoy.

This is a shot of the front axle with the black locker cut down and glued to the white axle gear. You can also see the square brass tube that has the white nylon piece inside of it as mentioned in "getbents" mod. The moon shaped hole inside of it has completely rounded out so I had to put a set screw in it to keep the axle from turning inside. You can aslo see the brass spacer on the far end of the axle.

The output shaft in my planetary gears was spinning even after bending the tabs down so I drilled holes in the seat of the output shaft and used a plastic weld glue to attach it to the planetary gears. The holes give the extra glue somewhere to go and also helps make the bond between the two parts stronger.

The axle shafts with there half moon shape round out the insides of the nylon real easy this is the reason for the brass sleeve. It keeps the nylon from expanding and braking. If the nylon has already broke before putting the sleeve on the damage is already done and the hole will round out. This is the reason for the set screws. they press on the flat spot of the shaft and solve the problem. If I had done all of the before mentioned mods from the start I feel I would have not had to open the housing more than once. The way it is now I've had it open so many times most of the screws have stripped the holes.

Don't know if this helps at all, but for the axle coupler mod, I took a 1/16 inch drill bit and drilled clear through(the exact center) of the brass square tubing and the plastic sleeve and axle. Then pressed a steel roll pin completely through everything. Shaved the ends off smooth. I did this before it ever stripped out. You would need two roll pins for the front. Works great, no movement at all!! And you can use the stock diff selecter still.
