I see I'm allowed a 1" tall boatsides in class 3. Where is that measured from? I get that it's vertical but is it from the point it starts to slope up to the body or from the bottom of the frame? Just trying to decide the best way to build, attach, and stay within rules.

There are no rules in Class 3 regarding boatsides. That is a Class 2 rule. Class 3 must be 4.5" tall from the skid to the top of the vehicle.....now get to building!

Oh boy... You just opened up a whole new world for me lol. Thanks!

Side not for others looking where is it measured from in class 2?

Cool. On an Scx the skid hangs below the frame so you can't really go much higher. But I guess every bit counts. Good thing I'm doin a class 3. Bring on the body scissors. Lol

Basically from the bottom of the skid to where it meets the body.

Wow, that sucks for me. I wish it was better defined in the rules section.

My C2 Unimog was based upon what I read there. Now I have to redo the entire bed, battery tray, cab mount and boatsides, basically the whole rear of the truck.

My boatsides start just above the framerails and are less than 1" to the top edge where it angles up perpendicular to the ground. They also incorporate the bed mounts as well as the rear cab mount and battery tray at the front.

Here's the mock up picture so you can see what I have going on. It measures just over 1.5" from the bottom of the skid to where it angles up just under the bed.

Don't start redoing anything quite yet Dean. This rule wasn't designed to stifle builds, it was made to keep people from chopping the bottom half off of their body off. I'm not even sure it's considered a boatside if it on a flatbed. We'll let you know.....

The rule says measured vertically.. it does not say where the boatside is mounted.. So locally I measure from base of boatside to top of boadside..

i read the rules as Sloppy explained it
ok, thanks. I will hold out till you let me know. The body is full height and the truck is top heavy with a full drop bed and stands 9.5" tall so...

I really screwed the pooch on this one....

What it should have said was "from the bottom of the boatside (where it attaches to the frame) to where it meets the body should be no more than 1" tall measured vertically."

Sorry guys .

Ok, thanks Tim. Just to be clear, in the picture, you can see the sheetmetal flange where it bolts to the frame, this area is flush with the frame (3/8" tall). So does the measurement start at the bottom of that or where it starts to angle up? Also at the top you can see it angles again to form sort of a channel area and flange that the bed mounts to.

So is it as Sloppy stated where he measures only the angled section or as in my case, the entire piece of steel from bottom of frame mounting flange to the top edge where the bed rests on top of the upper channel. If it's the whole thing I'm in trouble. if it starts where it angles up then I'm good since that part is less than an inch to the top.

Frame mounting flange height: 3/8"
Angled section height: 5/8"
Top channel height: 1/4"

Thanks again.

See I measure this.. just so no one goes crazy on that mount leg to the frame.. Either way Dean is good I guess in this case I am the bigger ruler nazi :D

Maybe word it as: For boatsides, the cab must not measure more than 1" vertically from the top of the frame rails to the bottom edge of the cab.

That is actually pretty good "thumbsup". You want to be part of the committee .

Thank you, I'm usually not too good with words."thumbsup"

I'm like a virus, seems when I'm part of something, that something deteriorates(spelling?).

So, if the body is actually on the outside of the boat side, nothing removed from it, is it still a boat side? I put floors under the the cabs of my truggies that act as sliders, but they don't replace any of the body. I'm a little ignorant on the subject.

No a boatside is removing the body and replacing it with a skid that gives you more clearance.
