Ok first lets start off with why sould I ever think of running brushless?
I have been runing brushed with 2 cell for ever and never had a problem. A lot of people I have talked to say that brushless has more torque and will run longer on the battery, but heres my problem with that.
1) I run a starter box motor, and have never smoked 1.
2) I have just as much torque as most brushless I go up against.
3) As far as run time i get 22 minutes out of my 2200mla 2 cell, and this isnt playing around the house. Its on the rocks. In a comp I ran 18 minutes before recharge.
4) Cost wise I dont see the benafit. I have about $40 in my set up. And if i burn up a motor by chance I can get another one at LHS for $10.

So where would a brushless benafit?

X2

"thumbsup" I agree 100%. I am happy with my brushed Tekin FXR pro system and although the brushless is the latest and greatest I am doing just fine with brushed. Don't plan on changing anytime soon either.

Good to hear that some people are still on the old school train! "thumbsup"
Ok so here is my set-up. Pictures to come soon ( got to find batterys for the camera ).
LCC stock chassis
Hitec 645mg
Futaba 59650 digital servo ( for the dig )
Common sence 2200mla 2c
Ssectrum DX3
Traxxas XL5 waterproof ESC
Ofna CRT.5 starter box motor
17 tooth pinion
Losi comp claws ( 8 ount weight in both fronts ) ( none in the rears )
Running full droop with 1000 diff fluid and internal springs
( have built a few tubers for it and am fine tuning the chassis's)

To date i have had no problems with motor or ESC, but this never goes without saying that it wont go out tomarrow. Even if it does i can spend 40-50 bucks and replace both.
Crawling doesn't have to cost so much! And us old school guys are still schooling the younger gen. on how to drive with old equipment.:flipoff:

im with you guys the titan 550 i run is perfect i love the control. but i will still be switching to brushless when i can afford it

motor

I smoked a titan motor also and put a Trinity monster max 550 motor 21T and it works better and it is BB and can be rebuilt. They make a 19T hand wound mod motor that has even more power. If you search the web you can find dyno tests of some of the 550 mod motors up against the titan 550.When I put the Monster max in I dropped 4t on the pinion and it still was faster and had great torque.

i have a trinity 21t 550 and it gets too hot even on a 12t pinion i loved the wheel speed though it was quite a bit more than the titan but the titan stays alot cooler with the internal fan.

Wheel speed.

The wheel speed is too fast for me so I geared it down to 14t and it is still faster than the Titan 550 and it is not overheating but I put a Integy 9 fin heat sink on there any way.If this motor is getting way to hot for some you must have drive line binding [ Check shims ] or like to hold full throttle when bound up in the rocks. Also check the ESC and turn off the drag brake,Even without the heat sink it never overheated but the extra cooling is nice and you could add a fan to the sink and keep it cold.I ran a 22t pinion just to try it and it was fast and still had plenty of power but the low speed crawling control was gone.

i have checked all the shims and regreased front and back, checked the cut on the gears they are right, checked mesh on all gears, still getting hot, mostley when running fast for long times not when crawling.

I guess my question would be why does it matter? Some run BL because that's what they prefer some run brushed because that's what they prefer. As long as your are happy with your choice then who cares, right?

Heat sink

Get a heat sink for $10 to $15 it is cheap protection and will work great for that problem. You can grind or file them to fit almost any application.I dremel mine to fit around objects like trans shafts, bolts, battery trays and anything else in the way.Sucks the heat right out and works great on brushless too.

Well thanks guys! I didnt realize there where actually this many people that still liked brushed motors. But my new problem ( after playing all night lastnight ) is that the axle stall is really ticking me off. My old clod didnt stall as much ass this thing. Any thoughts on this?
I have thought about putting smaller tires on the back to change the gearing just a hair, so that the fronts turn faster makeing the stall disapper. Any ideas on this?

Stall

Mine was acting just like that and I tore the whole thing apart trying to find the problem and I remembered that it only happened in forward not reverse so I switched the ESC wires around and reversed the Tx setting now it stalled only in reverse so I ordered a Tekin FXR.Now I have to deal with a crappy ESC untill mon.I think when my kid smoked my Titan he also damaged the ESC.He got it in a bad bind and when I turned around to look at where the noise was coming from I saw him full throttle with smoke puffing out the body.Oh well I did not think that cheap ESC would last as long as it did.

No my binding is because of the 2 worms not turning exactly the same or what ever they do. Anyway it is a common problem from what i have heard, but most ppl just hit the dig and the gas then its fine. Why should i have to deal with this for a truck thats not realy more capable than any of the others. It is just starting to make me mad.

If it is stalling because it is bound up between rocks or running into a steep climb where the front compresses and the rear tries to fold the truck in half then yes.If it is binding in climbing and terrain while you are moving try a different ESC if all the worms, spool and other drive train are ok.That Traxxas ESC is not a good one for crawling especially if not reprogrammed correctly.

you must not under stand! I can drive straight with now rocks or anything but floor, andi will stop after a bit. My ESC is fine. The motor is still trying to go and everything.
