brushed vs brushless

Brushed is cheaper, has smoother low speeds, can be run in the water, but has to be maintained periodically.

Brushless is more or less maintenance free, a bit more efficient, but costs more, isn't waterproof, and has poor startup performance (unless you spend money for a sensored system).

I thought brushless was waterproof...
Are the Traxxas water "proof" because they seal the cans?
I know they have a little plastic cover on the end of the cans.

Yup.

Most brushless motors are waterproof to a point, you can splash through a little puddle without too much worry, but I wouldn't take it swimming.

Basic is just a cleaning.......reoil the bearings. Sometimes the comm needs to be cut, and sometimes you need to replace the brushes. How often depends on a lot of variables...\

It's a fairly simple process that can be done in under 25 minutes once you know what you are doing....

It's when you put a sensor inside do they become not waterproof.

Sensorless, like the Traxxas VXL is waterproof because of no sensor inside.

Is a sensorless bl moter (vxl) any more or less waterproof than a brushed motor? Maybe more, because of maintaince?

I would think it would be less waterproof, as its relatively easier for water to get in than it is to get out. There is only one point of entry/exit compared to several points on a brushed unit.

forgot to mention that if you take a brushed (or any motor) swimming, you really should break it down and oil the bearings, check the brushes and clean the motor with really good motor cleaner. anything to keep the little buggers happy.

this is also part of maintenance.
