Building the FJ40

I'm glad to see the FJ getting some love and usage. A 77 model FJ with only 69,000 miles should look much better. Can't wait to see what you do to it. 8)

I really like it with the hard top, I should have put it on last year."thumbsup"

didnt take long to make a mess in the new garage

By putting that Toyota in it?

Yeah, got one of the ambulance doors on it, still working the other half door with PB blaster.

Rust is bad on this. About 3/4 of the tub needs to be replaced.

Well, despite using PB blaster thinking the nuts/bolts for the half doors would break free - the just broke.

All four of them twisted in half.

But hey, the doors are on.

Spent some time with a window scraper and Windex on the windows. Got a bunch of crud off that wouldn't come off otherwise. "thumbsup"

Looks nice. And yes those tires look a little over inflated. Tracking only in the middle, but it drives fine that way."thumbsup"

Been slowly ticking away at this thing.

The Warn X8000i looked like this after years of neglect.

Stripped it to bare metal, primed, and repainted it before installing new decals from Warn.

Removed the three knee pads from the dash, as well as the ash tray and the glove box door. Cleaned paint overspray from previous owners off the handles for the glove box and ash tray, painted the lettering for the glove box, and removed body paint from the knee pads - they're black again. Re-finished glove box handle (top of picture) .

Before and after of dash knobs. The hazard and wipe/wash knobs have been refinished.

Removed a bunch of crap from under the dash and hood.

New 15x8 black steel wheels should be here this week, new tires next week. New clutch is in, and new master and slave cylinders for the clutch are on the way.

Been taking my time cutting out the 3 inch body lift that was under it and installing new Energy Supension body mounts.

Yep, little things like detailing the knobs can make a big difference. One piece at a time and suddenly you've got a new rig "thumbsup"

Bah.

Needs wheel spacers...only 1/4" or so. I wanted 2" BS wheels but ended up with 2.5" BS. The rear caliper touches the inside diameter of the wheel and the front caliper touches the back of the spokes. I forgot that with the BS of these wheels they're reversed and the inner diameter is smaller than with a standard BS wheel.

Bone-headed move on my part.

It'll look better in a week or so.

Right now, though, the freakin' tires look HUGE on it.

Ordered some wheel spacers. Hated to do it, but I need'm.

Even though I can't drive it, I spent some time tonight with the wheels bolted in place getting a plan of attack for how to start hacking the body.

Opened up the rear wheelwell a good bit with a cutoff wheel. The tires wouldn't even fit in the stock wheelwells so I HAD to start hacking.

Had to open up the area in front of the tire then started cutting the arch up to the inner fender.

Up to this point I don't see a need for a suspension lift. The front fenders will stay pretty much where they are in relation to the tire but will be trimmed for clearance. When the tub, hood, and grille are brought down the side aprons will disappear and the fenders will be left. Cut fenders will do until the tube fenders are made.

Can't wait to get to the shop and get the cage and fenders built. Everything else is piddly crap...but crap that will make a difference in the end. "thumbsup"
