all I can say is that I'm coming up on having owned my GZ-1 for two years (I have the first generation and the one they're selling now is the 3rd generation) I can personally vouch for the GZ-1 being built like a tank, I have intentionally abused mine by tossing it, dunking it and all sorts of abuse that all other phones that I have owned would have destroyed. that being said I did not excessesivly abuse it such as spiking it, letting vehicles run over it or hitting it with a hammer.
 
Our record is putting it on a rope and lowering it in the middle of Chesapeake Bay, only problem is it wont receive calls from under my desk. Under water > Under the desk at work its screwy
