Castle products + spektrum = danger

Ok, I went out today testing my mamba 25/Revolver setup I still can't get it to set unless I have my throttle trim up about half way. Oh well, I though just let it set that way and see what happens. It will drive but cogs alot untill about 1/3 throttle then it runs smooth. It seems to cog less in reverse. Any info would help....

Sounds like you might have an older controller. The v1.07 doesnt cog, but I know the v1.05 and lower has a weird startup issue at first. Not really cogging, but not a smooth startup. What I have done to remedy the issue is put a steep section at the front of the throttle curve. On the Graph the throttle basically starts at the third line up from the bottom instead of the bottom.

Sounds like it is time to call up castle again. It seems that there are controllers out there that wont update past 1.05.

Mine still at 1.05 it says.

I figure the super low speed cogging is partly due to gear/driveshaft lash. It loads, then unloads, and over and over again. But put a load on the motor, and it's smooth, and really strong even at it's slowest speeds.

You know, that could be an issue that I didnt consider.

I thought I had this stuff all figured out. As more and more people try out the brushless it seems to get more and more complicated! I am almost to the point of recommending the Quark controllers, although they false start occasionally there is never an issue with the smoothness.

FYI Quark is actually Hacker.

I spent some time playing with the Castle Link Monday night and was able to get it alot smoother. First I had to figure out how to manually set the end points (not to hard at all, I'm just not familiar with this ESC). I found that the cogging is do to the low start up power. After playing with it for a while I found that it worked best if I had the start up power on high and the timing at low. It only cogs once right when you start moving. It was a huge improvement over Sunday’s test run

P.S. Do my settings sound right, how do my setting compare to yours?

I have been programming high startup power and medium timing on all the esc's that come through me. The timing doesnt seem to make a huge difference on the Revolver motor, although I haven't compared the motor temps between timing settings yet.

I just went to download the software (2.18 ) and it doesn't show a firmware of 1.07. Where are you getting it from on Castle Creations's site?

I just go in a couple of quark 33 at the store I work at, is there any advantage/disadvantage to them over the mamba 25 besides the delay w/ spectrum units?

The Quark controllers have a different startup and throttle feel. Some people like it better than the castle startup, and it is easier to feather. They also have a 3 amp bec.

The "feel" disadvantage would be the forward to reverse lag. It is a bit more than the Castle.

Just a note, I have similar issues with the Novak system (SS4800) and a spektrum (DX3). When you first turn it on, it runs full reverse for a couple seconds, then returns to normal.
