I searched for a deal on the nikko body for absolutely ages and eventually gave up. When the Team Raffee Co body first came out I laughed and swore I’d never buy one - LOL!

This is proving very time consuming, but well worth it and enjoyable so far.

I looked for one forever as well - and now it is sitting in a box.
You would spend just as much time on the Nikko body as you do on the TRC - the plastic is so thin and brittle that you would have to double up the hole thing - hahaha. And I am sure it is a lot smaller too (especially in width).

A quick test fit

I’ve been looking into doing a rusty paint job for the longest time but landrovers don’t rust so I have seized the opportunity. My Dads G Wagon ended up rusting quite a bit as we lived near the coast in South Africa. I remember it having to go into the body shop to have several rust spots cut out so I’m rusting this in tribute.

Using the dremel I’ve roughed a few spots

Painted with a dull yellow filler primer and then some Tamiya copper

Just got to wait for this to dry.........

Wheels and tyres, RC4WD (G) wagon wheels (conveniently) and pitbull beserkers. These should be somewhere between scale and performance - like I said before I want this thing to be fairly capable.

Nice close up! Got some Beef Tubes patties on there to help get the COG down.

The fitment of the wheelarches and the rear bumper have been a real pain in the neck, sanding - filler - sanding - more filler etc. Anyway, the rear bumper had to be extended slightly to marry up with the wheelarch extensions I made previously. This is just layered styrene sheet that’s been plasti-welded together.

I’ve used the old salt technique to get some weathered looking paint, still a work in progress.... The Tamiya copper is coming through a bit too much in places but I have a plan for that.

More on the Iron filings, peroxide, acid and salt...

I left the peroxide acid mix on overnight with a bit of salt he help speed up the chemistry. Then, rinsed the residue off and left to dry. A quick wetsand with P600 rinsed again and left to dry and this is the result. Needless to say I’m over the moon with the results!

Yes, I went against my original plan to paint it Colorado beige and went with “industrial grey”

No video, wish I had now but wasn’t expecting it to come out so well - lol

Paint primer. Then roughen / dremel areas
Paint areas you want rusty with Tamiya copper.
Wet areas you want rusty and sprinkle salt over.
Once salt is dry, spray top coat
Let dry and scrape / sand salt off.
Using a bit of top colour sprayed in the cap, dab paint where you want rust and while wet add iron filings.
Let dry and using 1:1 peroxide:vinegar brush over iron filings - this is when it starts foaming.
Leave for a few hours and then pour salt over ad wet again using peroxide:vinegar mix.
Leave overnight then rinse off in the morning.

So, onto the rear door, I really wanted to do a rear window defrosting element, it’s one thing when I’ve seen it before that I think really sets some builds apart from the rest. I found an image of a rear screen element online with the high line brake light in the right place. I took it into MS paint on the computer to resize it to the right dimensions of the g wagon back window

There was no detail in the bodykit for the back window brake light so I made my own out of some 0.15” clear plastic sheet and painted it with clear red

I have a laser printer so I printed the rear screen element onto a transparent sticky label. It came out great!

Lastly, another dose of salt, peroxide and acid and left it overnight again

I couldn’t wait, so the rear door is now finished [emoji41]

Final touch was just masking the swipe of the rear wiper and blowing a tiny bit of Matt clear over the top before peeling off.

Moving along nicely with the body now, some pretty boring stuff but really helps add to the realism.
Window masking and some Matt black for the surrounds

To try and help the hinges look a bit weathers ive painted yellow/copper and then top coat

Exact same process as before with the peroxide acid mix for the grille and front bumper

And a few little detail areas on the main bodyshell.

As a final measure of developing rust I’ve wet the panels and left them outside for a while.

Some of the rust spots dried a bit dark so I’m adding some Tamiya weathering pigments to help age things a bit more. Mainly using the orange and brown rust and a bit of soot

Windscreen detail. Very straight forward process just using masking tape, tracing the swipe with a pen and cutting the excess off with a blade. A quick blow over with Tamiya Matt clear.

The standard dash lights are a bit plain so I’ve set about backlighting them. A small hole drilled through to allow some light.

My dads old g-wagon had yellow backlit clocks so I’ve taken a small piece of sprue and glued it into place

I’ve made a box out of styrene to house the leds for the back-lighting

Painted the inside silver....

And the back black to match the rest of the panel.

All glued into place

With the addition of the ttamiya weathering pigments the grill is finished.

Using some big cable ties I’ve made a radiator to sit behind the grille.

Subtle, but a nice bit of detail.

Masked the water channel trim and will paint Matt black

Quick mock-up of the wheelarches and I have painted the indicator lenses with several coats of clear orange. Sprayed over the top with Matt clear to revive the shine and make them look more used.
