Just got out of the basement finishing up my Clod axle widening project, thought I'd share some pics. This is something Grizzly and I have been wanting to do for a long long time. Grizz has some ideas that will require far less machining. I think his way will be cool, but I'll let Grizzly show ya his ideas when he's done with them
Here are the parts:
I made the little ball ends for the "dogbone" u-joints. I had to make the radius turning attachment for my lathe to do it!
The spacer parts hold the inner bearing and space the axle out about 1" a side: (actually it's .980" a side
Here's the assembled axle showing how W I D E it is.
I hope this mod will help what I feel is one of the clods biggest problems, manuverablilty. The stock clod does okay, but when you widen the axles byusing wheel spacers and offset wheels you increase the "scrub radius". Most shafties have a much better scrub radius and they seem to manuver better than clods... This method of widening moves the steering pivot back more towards the center of the wheel. I also expect the steering servos to work better.
We'll see.
