Computer issues

I've been browsin the web on this laptop for the past couple hours now...no black screen yet...maybe i should run some diagnostics and heat this baby up before i call dell back today...i'm just wondering how i go about getting it replaced instead of repaired before i call them.

Also, i did some research, dell pro support is the "north america" support...i just have their basic support (I'm fairly knowledgeable with computers, so i didn't even bother considering the pro support option)

Pro support, which used to be Gold support is based in Houston, TX. I have a fleet of over 3000 dell laptops issues at work, we get the pro support for all of them. It is worth the extra money from a corporate stand point. Faster service, no run around, experienced techs on their end, etc.

Yea...that be nice, too late now i guess, i don't even remember how much extra it cost, but it was enough i decided i was savy enough i didn't need it...if i had know i'd have some insane hardware issues i might of got prosupport. i think i choose three year accidental over the 3 year pro support when i was topping out the $1500 budget...i also figured next day onsite for both, then i could handle some india english

Any info on how to get the replacement instead of trying to get it repaired? This is preferable, i don't really want the local tech replacing a motherboard again and have to run through this all over again.

Wholly shit, i called tech support just now, 5 minutes and the guy agrees i have possibly a faulty mother board, he then started talking about getting it fixed, i interrupted said i wanted a replacement, and he said ok, he just has to talk with his supervision and get it approved and he'll call me back. He said i can just swap out the hardrives when i get the new computer.

I was just blunt and to the point though when i called. I said i get a black or static screen during memory tests in diagnostics, bios setup, and the randomly in windows. I then said i think its either overheating or the gpu is bad.

yup thats all it will take. Sorry I just woke up from 2 17 hour work days and about 5 hours of sleep spread over 3 of them. yeah if the latops are identicle then jsut swap the hdd and you should be fine. May want to keep an eye on it thtough as with all the shutdowns and thermals you had it may have fouled up windows. Should be ok though. I wish i had a phone number for you but I dont. Yeah on mos tof them there is a thermal probe for the processor integrated into the motherboard and if there is an add-on GPU then one is usually built into that card.. Hopefully youc an get the new replacement but stay on them. Any dell customer can get a free replacement int he first 14 days of owning one. You just have to tell them. One of those things you have to ask for becasue they won't outright tell you.

Whats the chances of it messing up windows or my hdd?

I'm goign to call them tomorrow if i haven't heard back yet. The guy told me he'd call back in the next hour or tomorrow

nothing that a windows repair can't fix but honestly you should be good. Keep us updated. I want to see where this goes as you do a good service on the GT3b hacks. I need to get with you anyhow about some of those.

Cool, thats good to know...

Yea, i'll keep this thread updated

So i got a new computer today...but i am confused. The dell tech was never very specific what needed to happen after i got the computer. It sounded like i get the new one then i send the old one back.

So, i'm figuring there would be a paper with the new computer telling me how the exchange process works and probably a return shipping label with it. Nothing, so i check the distpatch # on the email they sent me, it was a exchange setup, but it shows cancelled. and no info otheriwse.

So i look up the new computers service tag #, and it doesn't say nothing about being an exchanged computer, and it all appears as if it was a purchased computer.

So i sent a call to the dell tech who set it up, got his voicemail (i had an extension), so i'm waiting to hear back from him.

Anyone have any info on dell exchanges? I don't want to keep both and then 6 months down the road charge me for the new one.

Normally there is a paper/sticker inside how to package old one and ship back on all Dell Exchanges, at least thats how they've always done it for my job.

still need to figure out why the dell website i only have a 2 year warranty now instead of the 3 years i paid for

Sorry, just saw this.

Yeah, sounds like a thermal issue. Had sorta the same thing on other laptops. The 1st run it was fine until it died, 2nd run was shorter, etc......Let it sit for 15+ minutes it would start fine.

Last one I fixed was because the "tech" lifted the metal heat transfer from the CPU, never put new heat transfer grease on. I happen to use it for my job and recoated the CPU with it.
No problems since.

Hope you have it sorted now.

I would call customer support regarding your warranty period.

So, i've been rockin the new computer for awhile now, all seems good, although it seems the fingerprint scanner on the new computer takes longer to "warm up" and verify than the old computer. Before i could scan my finger and login in faster than typing a password, but now its about the same

I also put two 4gb sticks of 1600mhz ddr3 in it, i wish dell made it so you can run aftermarket graphics card or offer something bigger than 512mb...even though i'd probably never need more than what i have on a laptop, i like to make sure everything is overkill
