Cut n shut (simple method)

After watching Supershafty's vid, i decided to try a set of Chisels on Axial 3.2 wicked retro's. GROOVY! :mrgreen:

This is my first attempt at narrowing wheels and enlarging 2.2 tires, so...let 'er rip.

i already had 4 chisels, but didn't know how many more i needed, so i just ordered 4 more. i also got in a set of oversize 40's to mess around with, but decided to use the 3.2's.

i used a regular utility knife. The bead cut off real clean, but the middle section seemed to heat up a little and not cut real clean, so i had to work on that surface to clean off a little melted plastic.

JB Weld them back together. i made the mistake of using fast set JB Weld, so i had to haul ass. :ror:

Just cut and glue two together. IC 2000 is all you need.

Here is how they look mounted. The tire diameter is 6 3/4" and the wheel width out to out is 1 7/16".

Next to a 2.2 Flatiron.

Next to 2.2 Chisel

Next, i need to figure out foams. i'm just going to cut n shut some foams. Any suggestions?

You can make your own foams by going to your local fabric store
and picking up a couple different types of foam and cutting out rings to make a 2 stage foam.....

Use a harder foam for the inner stage and a denser softer foam for the outer stage.......

Or.......

Make strips of foam and glue them together

I had the same problem with foams when I did some bigger than standard tyres a while ago. I ended up making a hot-wire foam cutter, using a labratory power box with adjustable power settings, various fittings and nichrome wire. Researched it mostly on YOUTUBE and INSTRUCTABLES, designed something for what I wanted and made it. 12volt I found gave best cut, more volts burns wire out too quick, less won't cut quick enough. My design and build doesn't give the best finish(bit notchy), but it does the job. From what I seen, a cutter can be made easily using anything to tension the wire, leads+a car battery.......

suppose I should add.....
BE CAREFUL!! ELECTRCITY RUNNING THROUGH SMALL DIAMETER WIRE GETS HOT, IT WILL BURN.don't ask how I know, I just do:roll:PLAYING WITH ELECTRICTY IN GENERAL CAN BE DANGEROUS!!
after all, common sense isn't always common....

update

Just working with what i had.:mrgreen: i used 3M spray adhesive. Sticks real good to arm hair too. Hey, "Cut n shut foams!":roll:

Trimmed a little to match the foams that were in the Chisels.

i suck at instant gluing tires, so i just used black RTV.:shock: i just needed the beads to stay put and this thing aint do'in speed runs.:lmao:

Until i get some BTXL's (longer beef toobs) or Wraith axles, i'm using these Proline 17mm adapters to gain a little width. They mount on the pin and have a nylok nut that stays put. Front is wider than rear.

Mounted.

Man, i need help with my steering. If i can widen the front axle with the toobs and tune the steering, this thing would be done.

Gonna go run it to see if the tires hold up.

Good write up i always wondered how it was done, once you know what to use the whole process really seems easy if you dont mind gluing your hands together , think im gonna attemp this on a old pair of flatirons i have laying around then try to do myself up a nice set

Quick update: Tires perform great as usual, but the "crispy cream" memory foams allowed too much tire roll when sidehilling. It was pretty hot outside, but the setup was just too smushy. So they def. need a stiff inner foam, and possibly plug the wheel vents. Will re-tune foam then glue up permanent.
