Differential Noise

Hi guys.

Video of noise:

I have a VRX Racing BF-4J (same thing as FTX Kanyon) and it's been fine so far but I noticed this rhythmic turning noise from the differential.

When i disconnect the driveshafts & test the motor. Sound, everything is fine. Furthermore when i turn the diff by hand, I think I hear something. Any ideas here? I did take the plate off to look at the diff and there is grease in there. Just not sure if it's enough. Will probably try some marine grease tonight to see if it's a running dry/lube problem. Will post update.

But if anybody has some ideas, I'm all ears. Thanks to any that can help.

Never heard that sound before, but it could be that your diffs aren't shimmed properly, or the ring gear is not seated on the diff cup /spool properly, or it's warped, or the pinion is warped, or you're missing teeth.

Some good tips. I'm going to take it apart tonight and take another look. Will post updates. Appreciate the help.

Problem solved.

I was starting to break it down last night. Going to disassemble it and during the process was testing it frequently. This is kinda silly but in loosening the pumpkin cover & testing I noticed the noise was completely gone. So it's either grinding or vibrating or something to that extent on the inside.

My options are...
- grind out the inside of the pumpkin cover to give more room
- find some kind of rubber gasket along the outside when I bolt it on
- Simply keep the bolts a pinch looser

I'm opting for just keeping it looser until I can find a more permanent fix. But the good news is that it's no big deal.

Check if there are shims between the pinion and the inner bearing, if there are any try removing them, then you can tighten your diff cover down. Otherwise you can add thin washers, or O-rings and tighten it down, or do what I would do, use a dremel to clearance the bearing seat on the diff cover.
