Doomp's VS410 Phoenix

Not much of a build update.
Filled the shocks with oil, 50wt front/60wt rear.
Built driveshafts and got them installed, gonna run the stockers instead of the MIP's.
Painted the radiator.
Sleeved servo leads with some alex tech 1/4 expendable wire wrap.

I guess i should have inspected the body instead of placing it on the shelf when i got my kit.

The lower front fender flair cuts are trash, will need to sand them down to prevent tearing in the short term.

The rear cab extension i guess you'd call it has tears in both of the lower corners.

One of the top corners on the bed sides has a tear in it.

The interior in the front by the dash the 90 degree cuts both have tears.

I expect better quality from a kit as this price point esspically from vanquish.
I dont believe this many could have accured in shipping, and the fender flair cuts are trash regardless.
The vanquish half cab body i have on my trail king was perfect out of the box.

I will go ahead and paint this body and run it after some shoe-goo repairs albeit i am annoyed at the lack of QC but i understand this stuff happens sometimes.

I have already emailed vanquish about the issue and see what they have to say. I've cruised through many vs410 threads over the past few years and have rarely seen issues to this extent. I believe this was either a monday 7am or a friday 4pm truck haha.

Excuse the photos my phone camera is junk.

I've been in this hobby a long time and getting the OD/dig servos adjusted correctly was a pita, however i believe most of that was the DX5 rugged touchpad and it not letting me individuality selecting which travel adjustment i wanted Finally got it all figured out though. Shoulda stayed with futaba.

Like an idiot i didnt check to see if i had any servo y-harness' when i ordered parts, so no winch or series 1 tail lights today but whatever.

I need to either flip the motor endbell 180 or resolder some motor wires but im driving today, should be fine for afew packs.

Time to sticker this dime piece up.

Looks great, wheel and body colors work well together. Look forward to seeing how you like it

The gunmetal grey color looks awesome. I was going to paint mine racing red, but you're swaying me with the grey.
Setting the endpoints for the shift and dig was a PITA with my 4PM also. If there was space for it, I might have run some very stiff servo savers.

Ran 2 2200mah 3s packs through it today, and wow the performance and lines i was able to achieve was ridiculous. I dont know what kind of voodoo witchcraft vanquish put the on the phoenix but man is it a fun truck to drive.

I had no idea i needed selectible OD but man that is truly a game changer, and of course DIG is nice to have. Did have some issues with running the truck in RWD it kept wanting to pop out of gear and was clicking slightly, but in 4WD all was fine. I checked all my endpoints and gave everything a once over on the trail. Ill tinker on it tonight to see if i can get it sorted better. Ill be going back to my spot tomorrow in the morning before it gets to warm. Temps were good on the electronics.

I was afraid the 30T torquemaster expert was going to be to fast but its actually abit slower than i'd like, I need to up the gearing abit.

The 90mm ssd shocks with the S8E 80mm springs is awesome, truck sits close to factory height. The extra articulation is perfect, the front springs are alittle soft, got kinda that sporty lean going on but it seems to work very very well.

The phoenix could definitely use some brass knuckle weights up front, besides that i cant really think of anything the truck needs.

Twade984 - the truck is awesome, im very happy with it.

CamoColton - tamiya PS23 gun metal, i did my capra with the same color. I've done enough complicated multi color paint jobs over the years, Gun metal looks good on pretty much everything with any wheel color.
Servo savers is an interesting idea for this particular truck, i might have to look into some low pro ones or something.

I was so focused on driving today i didnt get many photos but here are a couple.
Ill dig my good camera and tripod and shoot some video tomorrow for you guys.

PS-23 was my first guess. I’ve used that on my Cliffhanger bodied Enduro kit.

The servo saver idea came to me because if you shift the ratios, or the dig with the wheels not turning there is a good chance it won’t fully engage. Once power is applied everything will snap into place. But there’s that brief amount of time where the servo is fighting against an immovable shift arm.

The TRX-4’s two speed kit, although using a micro servo, does have a servo saver and it seems like a decent idea for any sort of shifting needs. Necessary? Maybe not. Time will tell.

Very cool! Terrain reminds me of where I grew up in southern Nevada. Sure wish I had rock like that here.

Looks like a foam upgrade may be in your future

Im in central utah, this is only about 15 minutes from my place.
Its a sand stone wash along side a mountain rode, 75ish minutes to run the trail one way.
southern neveda is awesome for crawling.

Im running crawler innovations comp cut F/R, medium rear and soft front.
that photo is deceiving.

Yes very deceiving. I went back through your thread and didn’t see them mentioned, so I just assumed.

Truck looks great! The Krawlers look killer on there, I've got them on a Gspeed now and I think I like them better than the Hyrax.

As far as the servo saver, I'm not sure it would be consistent. I found with the micro plastic arms I had trouble with consistent shifts and a little issue with the 30% OD popping in and out. I've since gone to aluminum and haven't had anymore issues, so I wonder if a servo saver would apply enough pressure?

May be worth a shot.

Thanks ALPINEX. the truck came out alright in the paint department. I was running low on PS55 and was only able to do 2 light coats of matte clear on the roof and fender flairs, i wanted to matte the entire truck.

The krawlers are my favorite tires they hook up most everything, PL BFG KM3's second and i have hyrax G8 on my capra with C.I. comp cut inners and soft outers and it crawls whatever i point it at. Just not the most scale tire but it suits the capra nicely IMO.

When camocolton brought up servo savers (which i havent thought about since my days of short course racing) i think a GPM or MST aluminum servo saver might actually work.
Not really a big deal for me since i tend to shift both OD and DIG on the fly while crawling, with 400oz inch servos with vanquish horns they WILL shift.

I may toy with the idea of servo savers when i order that micro servo kit for the phoenix, comes with carbon fiber adapter plates for the micros and i believe a carbon fiber battery tray, the company name eludes me and my google fu is failing me right now.

I did go out and ran afew more packs through the phoenix and attempted to film one handed. Ill work on a video edit tomorrow (which will most likely be trash since i filmed it on my phone, I tore my shed shanty apart and cannot find my gopro) I got back to a flooded bathroom today so that put a damper on other plans i had, But such is life.

I admit that my idea on servo saver might be entirely stupid. And I too will be making a point to only shift while things are slightly rotating so they mesh up quickly.

Not stupid at all, it might be worth a try. Would probably be a good idea on a capra with its crappy dig unit.

Dont get me wrong thier are times where im stationary and shifting dig/od when doing some techinical crawling where slow is fast, a small blip of the throttle will seat the shift dogs.

Oh I don't think it's stupid, just have to test it. I'll tell you several folks who burned up servos for improper EPA or aren't running servo's at all due to the setup complexity would sure appreciate it. Hell I've had to adjust the EPA several times on mine and a servo saver would pretty much eliminate that.

Doomp, I know the trays your talking about, they look really nice. I don't think I've seen it installed, need to have a look around. I know he has a kit that includes servos and it seems well priced.

Bit of a update on the phoenix.

Whipped up a front bumper out of 16Ga mild steel and 3/16 rod, not my best work but far from my worst. I flux core welded it, was out of argon for the mig in the shop.

Also found a solution for the winch line guide, I had a scx10 OG SOA servo mount, its perfect and allows for about 6ft of braided winch line on the low pro spool without sptting the line off.
I tried some rustoleum "textured" paint thinking it was something like truck bed coating, it is not.

Truck looks great Doomp!

The steel bumper is a nice touch, has a raw quality to it. I prefer the Bronze Contenders with the black rings as well.

She’s a beauty

Thank ya smog. The bumper looks worse in photos than on the truck in person, it will look even better once it gets some rock rash and paint chips on it this weekend.
Bronze TRD style wheels are my weakness.
Not a big fan of the stock phoenix bumper and i dont care about the pivot mount, it is nice its hidden though.
I want to make a bumper like the one linked below, just tucked up abit closer to the frame so it doesnt hang so low on the phoenix but thats real close to exceeding my skill level. That will have to be brazed though, no way in hell im gonna be able to fit a mig cup in there haha.
Not sure how well it will scale though.

It’s a very cool bumper, but yeah just might not leave you the best approach angle for the RC. The design could be modified a bit though, no?

What Bender are you using for your steel sheet?
