Drag car

Okay so I had this RJ Speed Sprint car chassis laying around along with this quite rare Parma Dodge Neon body.

Having been the owner of a modified turbo 1st gen 2 door Dodge Neon, I for the longest time wanted to use that body to build a FWD drag car. Well I got sick of staring at it so off I go.

I started by converting the chassis to power the front wheels. I did not want to use the foam tires because they stink on paved parking lots. After some trial and error with tire selections I came up with using super soft Tamiya F1 tires and wheels. It's also rear wheel steering so it made for an interesting configuration.

I got it all together just to see if it would simply work. Surprisingly the car tracked very straight. The motor I used to test it with was a brushed HPI fireball motor. To keep it from having Forklift type handling, the steering has to be turned down to where the rear wheels barely even turn, maybe about 5 degrees or so.

Yes it has the turning radius of the Queen Marry but it’s for going straight so I'm not worried.

Anyway I took it apart to do some fine tweaking to the chassis and started to put it back together. I want to finish the body with that white, blue and black Mopar theme the factory sponsored Dodge Neon drag cars used to have. Can’t find any Mopar decals that scale so I’m hand cutting all the decals. So far this is how it sits now.

Going to mask it off tonight and possibly paint it as well. Then the plan is to get rid of the rear body wing mounts and to fabricate a more realistic drag wing. Maybe even make a drag parachute as well. Hope it turns out alright.

Anyway, here you go. Hope you like it.

Cool idea! I've always liked the 1st gen Neons and would love to have an ACR that isn't beat to death. The rear wheel steering would take a bit to get used to, but for drag I'm sure it would work fine.

Most drag cars are rwd. Nice choice on building a fwd something different. I have always wanted to build a fwd rc for my self and put a brushless in it.

Okay, well here you go. It's tough to hold the phone steady while driving the car but you get the idea. The throttle setting is set at 80 of a possible 125 range until I figure out how to get more traction.

Once it leaves the line and hooks up it tracks quite straight on it's own until you let off the throttle.

I have to dial in the brakes so it does not do a bunch of 360's at the end of the run.

I'm also going to start adding traction weights in the front to see if I can get the tires to bite a bit better.

this a very odd build... but crc has some new rubber tires that will work for you...they are gt style..and you can get some hoosier decals from McAllister racing

nice video by the way

How strange, Ive been a neon enthusiasts almost since the beginning. A GF at the time had one and I didnt like it, but it was fun to drive. I later found one cheap when I needed a car and swapped the auto to a 5speed and loved it. Ive had 6 and still have 1.
In all the years Ive been on here Ive never noticed another neon enthusiast and haven't seen a neon Parma body in many years. this week Ive seen 2 haha.

Are you on Neons.org? I have the same SN there. If you dont mind I think Im going to share your build on the FB group, theyd get a kick out of it!

Great Job on the build, looks just like the old Mopar sponsored Cox & Mohler cars

Ok, here is my question. Why is there a wheelie bar if it is FWD? Is it a "cool" thing? Nice body by the way!

Because in many of the faster FWD drag cars they have used wheelie bars to pre load the front to keep weight on the tires. Its similar to a rwd car keeping the front end down

Very cool and different, turned out great. I actually had that idea once to build one out of an old pan car but I did not want rear steering tho lol.
