has any of you guys tried drilling the tires itself for venting?

haven't tried it my self as my wheels are vented but have read where several have done it without problems

Usually only needed with aluminum wheels that can't be vented or people that don't want to drill in them. If you have plastic wheels, just use a body reemer and put 1 or 2 1/8" holes in them.

Vented my Panthers...

From Harbor Freight for less than $5.00 and it works slick "thumbsup"

Do you do this with all your tires? Where do you put the hole and do they ever tear?

Yes, doing it for a year or now with tires. Same location as creepy's post above.
No tearing on any tires yet. It just came to me one day out in the garage.

Creepy's method works good too.

I use a leather punch. EeePee made fun of me until I started to do it. I put four holes in each tire, in the middle of the smaller of the two open lugs on Panthers. Haven't ripped a tire yet and I'm thinking the lug helps to make it the least likely place to rip.

I think they breath much better than venting the wheels and 100 times easier."thumbsup"

I use a leather punch as well and have been for as long as I can remember. It's also very common in racing to put electrical tape over the rims vent hole, and vent the actual tire.

I have tried drilling holes with a drill bit and it just wads up the tire. So what I do is just take some wire cutters and cut a slot on the inside of the tire. I do about 4-5 in the inside of the tire. Works great for me.

I can see the benefits of this, as a drainage thing if you drive in water a lot (guilty as charged, sir 8)) but I have encountered a problem with this:

If you have large soft foams that fill the tire up, and the rubber is quite sticky and tends to slightly adhere to the foam the air has to bleed through the insert top get out. That isn't a problem with a 8 pound crawler squashing the air out, but getting the air back in mid course is a different story.
You can finish up with tires that are completely flat with negative pressure
