My "new to me" UDR. I previously owned one that I sold to buy a motorcycle. I've always missed it, as the UDR is a blast to drive.

But I've resisted buying a new one because I don't want to give Traxxas my money. Their error in designing the axle housing, combined with their refusal to acknowledge that turned me off to Traxxas.

But I don't mind buying a used Traxxas, and found a genuinely lightly used UDR for sale. So I bought it. It's the Fox Racing / Justin Lofton livery, but it currently looks like this:

I've ordered about $500 worth of Vitavon & Hot Racing suspension upgrades. While I wait for my LHS to get those in, I started painting.

Wheels first. I painted the letters on the tires with this:

Then the wheels with this:

I was going to mask & spray the wheels, but I've found that I enjoy the work of using a brush much more than the tedious work of masking.

Finished wheels:

These parts have been cleaned and are awaiting various colors of paint. Both spray & brushed.

A bit more detail work done on Sunday. I think all of the detailed painting is now finished. I might touch things up down the road.

For the mirror finished parts (shock bypass reservoirs, radiator fans, fuel filler tubes) I used this stuff:

If you want to put a mirror chrome finish on plastic, it works. But that can also cost $32!

All the chrome stuff was sprayed. Everything else was brushed. There are certainly some blemishes but I won't see them at 25MPH.

The fans behind the radiator shroud were painted chrome to hopefully help them be visible in the sunlight.

All that's left now for paint is painting the roll cage and "tin" panels. I haven't decided on a pattern or color for the tin.

Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll have a pretty truck you can look at. I still need to install the suspension upgrades and axle housing once they arrive.

I had hoped to get this done before the start of our next desert season (November), but I'll probably have it ready to drive in a month or less.

Fun fact: the UDR is largely modeled after a Jimco Gen 3 Unlimited Trophy Truck, made in glorious Santee, CA. About 30 minutes from my house.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to driving this thing and finding out just how well that chrome stands up.

I try to drive the truck pretty realistically, so not sending huge jumps in skateparks. But realistic for a trophy truck does mean putting it on its roof every now and then in the dirt.
