Father and Son build of a pair of Yeti XLs

Today I assembled and painted a cage. I put it together, wiped it down with alcohol, then sprayed it silver.

That gave me a good base layer, and also let me see what it'd look like that way, since my son's Yeti will have a silver cage and mine will be...

Orange you glad I painted my cage?

The two Yetis will have different combinations of black, silver, and orange.

Nice paint job. At least the color is right. "thumbsup""thumbsup"

I got a ton of caca from friends for my Orange Wraith. It got a little outta control but i liked it. I was going to do my Yeti but just couldn't. The Silver turned out awesome as well

I'd ordered two sets of Fast Eddy bearings. Only one was put in the package. I called and spoke to Ed a week ago, and he sent me another set. First class mail. They're "delayed" in Michigan. All I know is, if I'd messed up and only packed one item but charged for two, I'd have at least sent the second set via priority mail. Geez. But whatever.

DHAWK stuff tracking info says the shipment was scanned and still in China. Results of experimenting with the extra shims I bought were that I could take up all the slop between three bearings if I put shims between them. I'll just wait for the DHAWK stuff to show.

Painting my cage orange may have been a bad idea. I wanted to see how the body panels go on, so I put the raw lexan panels over the cage and the edges scratched off some of the orange paint. My son's cage will not be painted silver as I'd originally planned. I'm glad the cage is part of the body, because at least it can be removed from the chassis and resprayed black if it starts to look crummy. I'd wiped down the cage with alcohol, but I guess sanding it too would have given the paint more bite. Oh well. Live and learn.

Oh...wow...what a awsome color!!! No caca!!

Learned something else today...
Servo horns come in tooth sizes. And I ordered the wrong Axial aluminum servo horn for a HiTec servo and now I await the right ones. Not that I'm up to that step yet anyway. And then I'll have to return the wrong ones.

I can't wait to get this build moving ahead again. C'mon DHAWK stuff... get here already.

I got a text alert that the DHAWK stuff is in NYC. With me being on Long Island, I figured great, it'd be here tomorrow. Silly Wabbit! Five minutes later another text saying the anticipated delivery date is Saturday. I guess it takes four days to get it through customs and bring it to the suburbs. At least the second set of Fast Eddy bearings is... doh! Still in Michigan.

The saga continues!

I'm not whining. Really.

Big update. Parts came on Friday and Saturday. We got more work done.

The servo wires exit from the front. I opened the case to see if the innards could be reversed and the wires come out of the back. Nope. So I had to route the wires under the servo. When I first tried it out the servo rocked back and forth so I shimmed it and snugged it down and that worked well.

Roller!

Of course I couldn't wait to get it down to the park. Body panels? Yeah, later...

But it wasn't all fun and games. I learned about wheels falling off. I learned that the wheel nuts let go, and the grub screws that are supposed to keep the hubs on don't. I learned this by A: losing a wheel nut in the rocks and sand and walking around hunched over trying to find it. and B: finding it, putting it on, and then having the wheel fall off after a high speed takeoff on pavement because the wheel nut and the grub screw inside the axle let go. Finding those things on pavement was fun. NOT. Found out I'm glad the car comes with a spare.

Found out I will need to live with battle scars.

Painting the cage may have been a bad idea. Whatever. My son thinks it looks cool.

So we took the YXL back home and I took all the grub screws out of all the axles and reapplied loctite. They were all loose. And another wheel nut was almost off. Something tells me they let go because the metal parts come packed with a light film of oil on them and this prevents rust and also keeps sticky stuff from staying sticky. I didn't think about it until after I redid them. So I'll be taking them out again and swabbing them with alcohol or using some brake parts cleaner first.

Then I started thinking that we might be able to keep things contained by using a screw with a washer, threaded into the axle center after the grub screw is put in. if done right, maybe the washer would also help retain wheel nuts that are trying to spin off. If I had a drill press, I'd drill a hole in the hubs and axles for safety wire.

Some more thoughts... This thing wheelies on 4s. I can not fathom 6S. It chewed through the stock plastic servo horn. Glad I had the aluminum upgrade on hand. The Futaba radio system had the steering backwards so I had to flip that in the radio. Then the car would go faster in reverse than forward. So I figured out the radio had throttle backwards and the car had the motor wired backwards. I flipped the radio throttle direction and swapped two wires on the motor and all was right with that.

I'd wanted to tape the insides of the tires to stiffen them and prevent ballooning. I didn't because I found the insides were ribbed for her pleasure. Not mine. Figured tape might not work. So I left it. The tires balloon like crazy when they get to spinning. Thankfully, ProLine tire glue works really well. Didn't lose a bead yet. I'd seated the tires on the rims and just ran a little glue in between the rim and bead and let them sit overnight, no bands or anything. If I tug hard I'm sure they'll come off, but I'm not gonna try.

I ordered a couple of castle quick link connectors to leave in the cars so I can use the programming card with ease. I'd set it up to have punch control in the middle, brake drag at 20% or so. Seems good enough for now. Still wheelies.

As for the father/son aspect of the build, my son hasn't shown much interest in the build. He gets bored watching me, and frustrated when I'm watching him. I explained that the first car would have a learning curve, and we'd do things wrong. Which we have. And waiting for parts wrecked our flow. I also told him the first car is mine. Not for selfish reasons, I didn't want his being the car we learned on in case of screwups. Figured I'd deal with issues on mine we could avoid with his. Like the battle scars. Though he thinks it's cool looking. He's now taking interest in getting started on "his" YXL. I hope to let him do much more stuff now that we kinda know how they go together, that's if he wants to. Still have to decide on a pain scheme for mine, something that'll go with the battle scars. I think we've named them. Beast 1 and Beast 2, like Dr. Seuss's Thing 1 and Thing 2.

He got to drive the YXL and took to it pretty easily. He's got more restraint than me. I do bad things with powerful vehicles. He takes it easy. Who's the dad and who's the kid, huh?

I'm so glad you kids :-) as in you dad are having so much
Fun cool to see them going together

I was starting to wonder if I'd made a big mistake... times two.

But running this thing is fun, when the wheels stay on. I look forward to having them both done, maybe putting the GoPro inside one and shooting video following the other over the rocks and stuff.

Perhaps we'll get my son's done this week.

I can tell you when I put my wheels on I put them on with a socket and a 3/4 ratchet
And I get them supper tight
And I've never lost one
Also if you don't want it to have battle scares don't
Drive it just look at it :-)
My son is getting a yeti xl for X mass but it's already
Built he is 8 and there's no way he is going to sit around
Waiting for me to build it for him lol
So I built it at work

I use a SMALL amount of blue loctite on the wheel nuts. Punch control is your friend as far as wheels and diff gears surviving. On 6S I run 60% punch 30% brake and no drag brake and haven't had a wheel problem in over 10 packs now.

So far the wheels are staying on after going gorilla on the nuts. We played out on our very small lawn the other night but it was still fun. Which prompted me to order some LED lights for the YXLs. I ordered each YXL one set of six LEDs with 1/4" holder bezels, and a 2" light bar to fit in the pusher bar on the front. Hoping it'll all be ok plugged into the receiver. I think I need to hook up the castle link and make sure it's throwing 6.0v through the internal 8A BEC. I didn't touch it and it may be at 5.5 but the servo still works ok. 6.0 should make things better. Also, I have brush-on making film on the way too, so I'll finally get to paint the body panels. My son's YXL is still in the box. Perhaps we'll get started on that build tonight. He keeps asking, which is good. I think having him drive mine has prompted him to want to get his done, so maybe he'll be more into the build on his.
