Hey guys, I'm new to this whole building RCs. Always wanted a better grade RC since I was young. Now that I have the money, I bought myself, after weeks of research, a SCX10 RTR Honcho from TowerHobbies. I ordered it monday and they said it wouldnt come in till friday. BUT when it got here on wednesday, I was so stoked.

It's exactly what I wanted. Runs great. Already scuffed it up a few times but oh well.. They're meant to be used, right? Even though everyone and their mom knows what it looks like, I'll put some initial pics so i can see from where I started once my rig is built.

Welcome and remember there is more information about crawlers on here than your brain can handle. So search and search again, there's a fair chance it's been covered a time or two. Anyway, welcome and do it to it! "thumbsup" I see you've titled this as a '79 F-150, looking forward to see where you go with this.

I know there's a lot of '79 F-150 builds, well i was looking for a 78 but 79 is close enough.. Also, to be honest it was the first truck i was ever attached to. My dad would let me steer his '78 F-150 while he drove sometimes. I remember so many roadtrips from Missouri, Mexico, Colorado, Washington State, in that truck. He sold it to an uncle and i guess it was totaled after a few years in the '90s.

Here's what I'm looking at for reference for the body:

Thanks! Oh i know. I've used the site to research so many different processes. Heck I already mirrored my transmission, removed the shock stops, and added the extra 4-link above the front axle.

Ok so here's my build plan so far:
(If anybody sees something that i could do better or change for a more scale/trail type rig, let me know)

Free-ish upgrades:
-Remove Shock Stoppers (Complete)
-Raise front bumper (need to manufacture extenders out of hard plastic or metal)
-Add weight to tires (need to wait for new wheels/tires)
- 4 way link to front bumper (complete: used extra 4link from parts that came with the rtr)
- Mirror transmission (Complete, kinda sucks i cannot put the stock cover back on)

Bought/Ordered:
- HPI 1979 F-150 (Ordered)
-Steering linkage (ordered Integy Alloy Steering Linkage Silver)
-C-Hubs (ordered Integy Heavy-Duty Castor Block Silver)
-Steer Kuckles (ordered Integy Heavy-Duty Steering Block Silver)
- Servo horn (bought GH Alum. servo horn)
- Traxxas Turnbuckles Rear 116mm T-Maxx 2.5 (bought)
- Traxxas Steel Push Rod Revo (bought)
- Double Sided Tape for ESC (esc fell off when i was cleaning my truck)

Eventual Upgrades:
- Shocks (Ultimate Scale 100mm)
- Drive Shafts (MIP Spline Center CVD)
- Differential (Robinson Racing Outdrive Diff Lock Gear)
- "Stock Look" 1.9 Beadlocks (looking at 5-lug wagon 1.9 wheel)
- Tires (Pitbulls, rock crushers, swampers, rok lox, or baja claw TTC)
- ESC/Motor (Looking at Tekin FXR ESC/35T Crawler Motor Combo)
- White Styrene Camper

I also have the original Dark Jade Metallic spray paint for the old truck. I was looking at scuffing the outside, priming, and spraying it there. After that, cover the inside with metallic rust so if and when the green scratches off or cracks it looks nice and old. Any suggestions for a better process to do this? Maybe a type of solution to avoid cracking?

Any suggestions are appreciated!! 8)

Check up in the paint section, for the rusty look. I think there's a spray on adhesion promoter. Bulldog something, someone correct me if needed, not sure if it'll help with cracking, but it should help the paint stick better.

Welcome, looks like you're off to a good start. The '79 F-150 is one of my favourite bodies available at the moment. Here's a pic of mine when it was new and on Swampers:

It now has Dingo bumpers front and rear and I'm running my MTZ's on it (I don't have a pic of it but can get one if you'd like)

I'm still waiting on some stuff I ordered through my LHS. So far, i've installed the upper links, alum servo arm, and taped the esc back on. I'll put more updates once I throw the stuff I ordered onto the truck, including the body and steering links, C-Hub, steering knuckles, body.

I'm digging this rig. Reminds me of my old '77 f250 I drove in high school. I still plan on building a rig with that similar body.
