Gavin's Class 2 SORRCA Toyota Truggy reborn - the 3rd & 4th time now

We brought this truck to the ETXRCC Get Together this weekend at Barnwell Mountain ORV Park. Here's a brief video of it on the rock garden at Barnwell.

Our local club ETXRCC had a Get Together @ Barnwell Mountain ORV Park in Gilmer, Texas last weekend. It was an evening get together. We decided to stay the night ahead of time in order to test and record the following morning. Here is a collection of footage from that test and tune. This video has a few more clips of the Toyota truggy in it. The truggy as filmed weighed 9 pounds 1 ounce. :shock:

<iframe src="//www.youtube.com/embed/MClsIrOREyo" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="560"></iframe>

Video of the C.I. 1.9 Toyota Truggy. The truck is based off an Axial SCX chassis, axles and transmission, and Tamiya Hilux cab; all of which have been heavily modified and customized.

The 1.9 scale rock crawler RTR weighs 9 pounds 5 ounces.

Tires & Foams:
Pitbull Rock Beast 1.9 Tires
The tires are vented using a 2mm leather punch (3 per tire).
Crawler Innovations 4.50" Lil Nova Foams
Front foams are part # CRI-2024 (4.50" / Medium Outer)
Rear foams are part # CRI-2028. (4.50" / Firm Outer)
The closed cell inner foam is water proof, while the conventional outer is not. As you can see from the video, the water does not effect the performance of the foam or the tire.

At the end of your water fun, simply run your truck at wide open throttle with the truck in a elevated position. It will sling out most of the water through your vent holes. Any water left can be hand squeezed out of your tires vent holes. Store your RC vehicle with the tires off the ground to avoid flat spot in your tires and foams from sitting. Proper care of your foams and tires will protect your performance enhancing investment.

6 months later...
Time for an update...
Gavin ran this in the July ETXRCC scale competition. Not having functional winches really hurt this rig. August ETXRCC comp came, Gavin ran this for a course or two. The power wire came loose from the MMP circuit board ending the comp for this truck. Then it sat for a while.
The ETXRCC September comp is this weekend and the rig needed to run. Gavin disassembled the cage and body from the chassis for me to speed things up.

I wanted to update the truck with new electrics as well install heavier duty hardware to handle the weight and continued use.

First out was the plastic Maxx shafts and transmission.

The old transmission used a plastic case and axial slipper. It also used some of the original Crawler Innovations 6mm Extended Outputs for Axial transmission with Traxxas E Maxx or E Revo plastic driveshafts.

I was hoping that I could get by with a 56T spur gear with a 10tooth pinion, but it doesn't fit. So it's currently using an 11tooth pinion on 4S lipo and its OK for crawling. The ESC gets warm though. I'm using the backing plate from the rrp axial set with the rrp 56t gear for a slash;

The old trans had aluminum hot racing gears in it and the idler was getting sharp from being worn out.

I installed fresh steel gears from rrp;

Crawler Innovations outputs;
6mm flat extended set middle;
5mm round extended and lightened in black on outside; also installed on rrp gear; I did have to dremel the outside of the short side to fit into the slightly smaller opening on one side of the rrp gear; and after final assembly, the extended output had to be removed all together in order to use the MIP shafts on the 12.1" WB

Vanquish Products produces a licensed Currie Enterprises F9 axle set. The fit, finish and quality of Vanquish Products is 2nd to none in the remote control hobby. After several years of use, Gavin's plastic front Axial SCX axle housing had cracked beyond repair. It was time to upgrade. Having already owned the little 1.9 Toyota Truggy for many years, strength and durability were most important. The Vanquish Products axle design is superior because it uses a larger pinon bearing inside the axle case to handle more load. The VP axle design also fully captures the carrier bearings for strength and gear mesh. Currently VP does not offer a 3 link for the front axle, so Crawler Innovations improvised our own for this build.

The tires are 1.9 Pitbull Tires Rock Beast and each tire has 3 breather holes. Without breather holes in the tire, the tire will not conform for traction. The closed cell foams sold by Crawler Innovations do not absorb water, they actually displace water. They basically seal whichever breather hole is on the ground, while the open holes allow for air movement and tire conformity. The foams are Crawler Innovations brand, Lil' Nova 4.50" dual stage Comp Cut; part # CWR-2025 front; CWR-2026 rear, medium outer front and firm outer rear since this trucks weighs 9 pounds 10 ounces RTR.

The Meteor Crater rest stop is located in Arizona along Interstate 40. Crawler Innovations stopped on the return trip to Texas from King of the Hammers 2016 to rest and play on the rocks. The custom built Toyota Truggy featured in this video has some history and many talented builders have helped on it. The full build thread for it is linked here:

Gavin drove and filmed this video. The truck runs on 4S Lipo battery and is geared down using Crawler Innovations extended transmission outputs to move the drive shaft away from the spur gear. Tekin Racing ROC 412 motor in the 2300KV, Castle Creations 1 cell esc, Castle BEC, Hitec servo, Axial Racing based axles and transmission with Vanquish Products aluminum upgrades. The tires are 1.9 Pitbull rock beasts original version, with Crawler Innovations 4.50 Lil Nova Comp Cut Foams, CWR-2025 front w/ medium outer, CWR-2026 rear w/ firm outer.

Thank you for watching.
