I just recently picked up a second hand Phoenix. I’ve yet to take it outside due to the snow here. It has a Castle Copperhead paired with a Castle 2850kv crawler motor. Any suggestions on pinion size. There’s a 15T on it now. I do 50/50 crawling & trails.

I have the Mamba X with the 2850kv Slate combo in my Phoenix. I am still running the stock pinion that came with my kit which I believe is a 15T pinion.

It has a good low end speed with enough top end when needed. I do run a throttle curve in the Mamba X to help give it better low end control.

With a Holmes puller pro 2700kv on 3s I’m running 12/56. Still has pretty darn good wheel speed and great low end control.

I’d say I’m more of a crawler than trail use, but the wheel speed is still more than enough for trail use

3s mainly but I do use a large 2s on the trails

The way it sits now, assuming it's a stock phoenix portal on 3s, it has a theoretical top speed of 9.25mph to the front wheels (shifted to 6% OD). That's kinda perfect to still be fast. I'd just leave it, and stick with 3s. Or volt up to 4s and go with a smaller pinion to match that speed... that'll make it crawl better.

First screenshot is your truck. Second screenshot is one of my phoenix based trucks that has a theoretical top speed of 10.09mph (front wheels in 6% OD), which is faster than necessary.
