I didn't want to clutter up Tim's PitBull Rock Beast II review thread so I thought I'd start my own.
Dezmoon contacted me and asked if I would be willing to run the new Rock Beast II tires for the Northwest Scale Championships and since I love to try new stuff I happily agreed. My friend has run the 1:1 PitBull Rockers on his 1:1 Bronco and we were impressed with them so I was very excited to give these new scale tires a test.
The first thing I noticed was of course how sticky and soft the tires are. The sidewall has better support than other 5.75" tall tires I have and on a heavy scale rig that is a good thing. Don't take this as them having a stiff sidewall, because they are still soft and flexible, just that they have a bit more support.
Next I noticed how easily they mounted on my wheels. I am currently running some old school RPP Hobby scale wheels. The Pitbulls just went right into the beadlock groove and I was able to seat them by just pushing on the ring. Another pair of tires I have require me to mount each bead at least twice because the tire pushes out of the bead groove and gets pinched. The PitBulls mount up smooth as butter every time.
Today was my first chance to run these on the rocks and I was very happy with the performance. The tires grip the rocks really well, in fact Ty was taking pictures of Guido for RC Driver magazine today and he wanted to get some action shots with the tires spinning. We had a really hard time getting a shot because everytime I goosed the throttle the tires would hook and the truck would shoot up the rocks, it was hard to get the tires to just spin.
WIth an 11+ lb rig I have learned to live with sidewall roll while sidehilling; it's just something you have to expect even with the stiff foam setup I have. I will say that what I saw today was not excessive folding of the sidewalls. I am quite happy with how they worked today.
I will continue to update this thread as I learn more about the Rock Beast II tires, and I want to do my own comparison with other tires. But for today I have to say that I am impressed with these tires and am glad to be running them. Here are some pics from my first day on the rocks.
