Rock Crawler
Got GH5 the day it came out (had it pre-ordered so I am geting GH Van Halen for free...!!!)
Thought I would do a quick little write up of some of the goods and bads for anyone that may be thinking about it
1st up, the guitar itself.
Its basically the same thing as the guitar in World Tour. However they have rubberrized the strum bar, and the star power button which makes them far easier to work. The "start" buttons have been recessed lower into their holes so you wont hit them as easily if your like me and only use the star power button. The neck slider has been redone, it now has position markers on it, and the colors have been moved to the neck instead of on the slider itself. All around, and baring the ugly faceplate, its a huge step. Best plastic guitar yet.
2nd off, we have the game itself. I'll seperate by parts of the game.
1st, the menu's. Very confusing if your used to the standard GH menu layout. However it takes almost no time at all to understand the path they were trying to go with this, and find that its much better this way. You no longer need to actually back up to the main menu to change play types from career to quickplay. Its all done in a smaller menu.
2nd. Create a Rocker. This is HUGELY imporved over World Tour. There is so much more that can be done including using your Avatar (if you have the 360) which is really neat. The instruments are no longer all just fake knock offs. Now they have liscensed alot of big names, and you can customize/build your in game instrument to mimic your real life guitar. Dont worry, the neat/funny/awsome guitars are still in there as unlockables.
3rd. Difficulty. GH World Tour was increadibly easy to me. I thought they stepped the difficulty down way to far from GH3. Well, not anymore. Expert moves from fairly tough to flat out stupidly difficult. I cant quit pinpoint what it is, but Its almost like they have found a whole new way to use the chords and note buttons in the game. It feels alot more realistic, and fluid. Not at all like your just hitting buttons in sequance, but rather like each note is placed where it is for a reason. I would say that medium, and hard are about on par with where World Tour was in terms of difficulty. Easy, and beginner are still the same.
4th. Party mode. Most likely the coolest new addition. Having a bunch of friends over, pop in GH 5, enter party mode and it will begin to auto play everysong in your list. Dont want to play, no problem it wont make you. Hear a song you just have to rock out to, all you have to do is pick up an instrument press a button and your rocking in no time. It will even let you play any arrangement of insturments you like. (i.e. 4 guitars, 3 basses and 1 drum, 2 vocals. anything). Best of all, you can jump in and out at any time with no interuptions to the music.
5th. DLC. you can import 35 of the songs from World Tour for free if you have World Tour, and all of the WT's DLC will move over. Smash Hits song list is also downloadable for free provided you have the game (and the unique game code on the manual).
6th. Song lists. There are 85 effen songs. You are bound to find some you love, and some you hate. You no longer have to play them all to complete the game. Pick and choose which ones you want, and dont play the rest. However, while there are alot of good songs, I personally feel they went to broad in their song choices. Trying to appeal to everyone. There just aren't as many crazy good songs on this one as in past titles. Having said that, with all the DLC and the past songs ready and available you really cannot go wrong here.
Overall, on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best, I would say a solid 8.5 to 9. Lots of realy good stuff, and some not so good stuff. If your a fan of the series, or have been waiting for the right one to pick up then you simply have to get this one.
Great game.
