He doesn't need to jailbreak it. If he just downloads the right image and does a selective restore it should be fine. It won't need to contact their servers.

i'm just saying use redsn0w and follow the directions to enter pwn DFU mode, not to jailbreak. he will select the 4.1 firmware just to get past the initial screen, then there is an option to enter pwn DFU mode which bypasses some of the apple restrictions and can also allow you to use a custom firmware.

He has an iPhone 2g. The highest he can go is 3.13. I agree about using Redsn0w to get the phone into dfu mode. He should be able to do a custom install at that point using the stock 3.13 psw for the 2g.

oh okay, i didn't know it was the 2g but it should still work as long as he selects the older firmware.

If you just want to put the phone in dfu mode follow these directions.

iClarified - iPhone - How to Put an iPhone Into DFU Mode

Then do a left shift key restore using one of the iphone 2g firmwares on this page.

iClarified - iPhone - Where To Download iPhone Firmware Files From

You should be set after that.
