HPI gear reduction box vs. 55 turn motor

With the big amount of gear reduction the box offers I am assuming it will be a slower truck then if I put a 55 turn in, but will the gear reduction equipped truck with stock motor have as good of control IE: hill holding and roll control as it would with the higher turn motor or should I just do both.

Depends how much wheel speed you want. Both would be extremely slow.

I know real rockcrawling not the RC stuff trying to get my WK to go slow right now it is stock except for HPI wheel base kit and hand cut tires.. Whats the ESC and How much will the stock one take(volts?).

im thinkin of usin the stock electronics and a 3700mah should be 7.2 i think

and the slower the better but its mostly opinion and how you think truck will do

I like wheelspeed, I use a sidewinder esc, 55t motor, and a 10 cell elite 1500mah pack. (yes 10 cells:ror

Mine truck isn't exactly stock but the same rule applies, use the biggest voltage battery your esc can handle, get a nice high turn motor, and gear for torque.


Ideally you want the voltage giving you too much speed, then you can gear down lower. Top priority on the upgrade list should be tires, gearing, motor, esc, servo, battery, chassis in that order. Get the first 4 and you will have a VERY capable crawler

I ran a 7 cell 3800 with my stock esc and it would get warm but thats cause it would run for 2.5 hours. I moved up to the rooster with a 65t intergy,Pretty slow but great torque. 14/96 gearing . With the aluminum tranny gears and strc rear lock outs it will snap front axles about twice a week. Got the cvds coming .hope that fixes it.

55t vs Gear reduction box

If price is the issue you will save a few bucks with the gear reduction box - but the extra gear box will add weight in just the wrong place. Center of gravity is an issue for me so I went with a 55turn motor - 96 tooth spur and 12 tooth pinion. Works great for crawling and doesn't add weight. "thumbsup"

In the video below you can get a feeling for what the reduction gear box will do. My WK in this vid has the stock motor and gearing, and an ordinary 6-cell nimh pack.

yeah i think the gear reduction might be good for the stock motor but running a 45-65 turn motor on a 15/96 gearing should give you all the power you need. if your stalling the motor then your probably bound up and about to brake something. if you want some speed add a small 3s lipo pack to the mix.
