Ya, the vid is still up on FB. Some kind of intro event - National Retail Hobby Stores Association - it was sitting next to a new Axial Blazer and some on-road cars.

The cross-ways battery tray makes zero sense to me but I'm sure a lot of folks will like it, especially for cheap 3S lipo power.
The link relocators are fine, nothing you can't get in aftermarket. Otherwise a body and plastic links? Oh. [shrug]

My modded cross-ways (aka transverse) LiPo tray from BPC keeps all the weight up front and helps mine climb like a billy goat...

A battery tray higher up in CG and off the axle cannot be better. Maybe I'm just not getting it.

A super long wheelbase does not seem like a big advantage either. Nor a really bulky body. Different is better, sure, but not at the expense of crawling ability.

The axle mounted battery tray is not "comp legal" and only took shorty packs and lots of people complained. (I thought it was a great idea personally - very innovative) In any case, good to hear Vaterra is listening to the masses.

I like the body - it's different for sure. I'll wait for the official release though and see what's what.

I have never heard or seen any rule that barred Ascenders for crawling comps. That's a new one on me.
Here I've been running them over the past year and no one ever mentioned it. [shrug]

Nationally, the original floating stock tray is technically illegal. Lots of local clubs will allow it to keep local members interested. SORRCA rules state that nothing can be added externally to "weight" the axle other than a servo. There's more to it but that's the gist.

The battery tray was a selling point for me originally. I thought it was a cool idea and at the time I was still fairly new (again) to the hobby and didn't have a stack of lipos. Buying shorty packs wasn't a hindrance in my mind at the time.

Blame SORRCA. Your comps must not follow their rules which, IMO, is a good thing. An organization that impedes progress is bad for the hobby.


I like the Suburban body. People are complaining that it looks out of proportion, but that always happens with RC bodies. The manufacturers just do things to hide the erroneous proportions. I think this body is pretty proportionate, but being up high on a chassis that makes it look lifted is throwing most people off.

I don't necessarily like that Horizon is going budget brand with Vaterra while at the same time highlighting Axial. If anything Axial should be the budget brand because, in reality, their materials of construction are already budget. Hopefully this is just Vaterra's version of a Deadbolt and not a sign of the future watering down of Vaterra.

Nope. Metal trans was what sold me on Vaterra when I was getting back into the hobby agaIn.

The rtr come with plastic gears already. You had to get the kit. I run mine really hard and on 3s. I have yet to blow anything. I look at it as people like to mod things. The vaterra ascender is probably the most boring because it requires the least work to upgrade. Cost wise it will be about the same due to its low cost. I just hope there will be a kit with included metal links and gears. Or different versions with the upgraded components.

Did you catch them pointing out the plastic gears as a selling point.

In the video it sounds like the person interviewing asked about the gears. He just said hey plastic gears are awesome, you won't break them, so technically I don't think it was really a feature. If you look at there website today it doesn't list plastic gears as a feature.

The use of the plastic gears helps keep the price point down I'd imagine. Rich did mention it when asked. It's the same gear set used in the Twin Hammers. Luckily factory "upgrade" gears are reasonably priced.

No, now the RTR Suburban will come with plastic tranny gears. All other Ascender RTRs have always been metal gears and I've not had any problems with them.

No, the new Suburban bodied RTR will come with plastic tranny gears. It's done to have any entry level RTR truck ala Deadbolt, but Vaterra.

What Rich meant is that the plastic gears are high quality plastic and that they've not broken any. Vaterra metal tranny gears are still a hopup option.

For what it’s worth, the Way I see it is that the majority on this site are looking for Vaterra’s next crawler innovation(we all want to know what’s over the next rock so to speak). This release doesn’t speak to that and likely wasn’t intended to.

I guess it make the Ascender more competitive in the marketplace.
