It's about F-ing time

And you still think we should do everything ourselves?

When people focus their minds and energy on one subject, they become experts. "thumbsup"

Of course, but the fuzzy point I was trying to make was that there are tons of things we can do ourselves. Its just become too damn easy to pay someone else to do it for us.

...in 10 years will result in this...

You really shouldnt talk on the phone while you are using the shitter....it's rude.

You are right....it has. People have also realized that if you pay someone who is an expert, then the product turns out nicer.....and you dont end up with 50,000 holes in your roof that you built yourself. "thumbsup"

Trust me, I am a cheap ass. I'll try LOTS of things for myself. A while back, we were having to wash all of our dishes by hand....because I had damn near completely disassembled our dishwasher trying to fix it.....and I did too....for ~$20. Much better than buying a new one, as my wife suggested. "thumbsup"

Only because you have no clue how liberating it is. If you did, you'd understand.
Actually, in my parents house, you'll find a rotary phone in their bathroom.....and you can always tell when my dad is on it.....you can hear the fart fan!

Damn, you're a city boy, aren't you? :lmao:

Obviously, an expert will do a much finer job. However, there used to be this thing where older people would teach younger people how to do things. Hell, even the adults would swap techniques between themselves and refine a process throughout the community. And it didn't cost a dime.

I learned how to strip and reroof a house when I was 16 (which is still standing nearly a quarter century later btw, and with the shingles I installed :ror:). Not by paying to go to a roofing school, but by having my dad show me how. And how did he learn? From his dad. My grandparents on both sides built the houses they raised their kids in. Not "built" like today where you build a house by paying people to do it for you, but with their own hands. Both are still very nice, solid homes I would love to live in.

Actually, no....I've got a lot of various skills and I grew up in the sticks. My dad was in the ac biz....and passed that info down to me along with some other useful stuff. Now he calls me for help. However, sometimes, my money is worth less to me than my freetime...so I'll pay someone to do the work that I don't want to. "thumbsup"

A funny man... Why didn't you make them for her?

Because no one showed me how.

My dads parents were farmers, and self sufficiency was of high value. I never once saw them take a piece of machinery in for repair. About the only thing they would go to the store for was a few canned goods and soda pop.

I know where you're going with this...

Technology changed a lot of things, so did the introduction of the concept of money.

Still, we can grow our own vegetables, maintain our own homes and cars, take better care of ourselves, etc etc. All it would take is a bit of work, a little education, and the physical motivation to actually go do it.

There are times when, like you, my time is more important than money. But at the same time, if I think I might learn something useful I'll at least try to do it myself first.

I agree with you. People should try to learn new things (actually, I think allowing our government to provide for it's people rather than govern is making them stupid). Fixing shit is not hard...it just takes a bit of confidence and some time. Actually, my attitude is "if I cant fawk it up any worse than it is now, then what's the harm?".

The monetary/barter/trade/animal pelts system has been around since the beginning of time. It's not a new concept and neither is people's desire for all of the money/pelts/spices/etc. But, IMO, that has more to do with the person than the system.

You see where I am going because I can break it down to the smallest level of people requiring trade/money to live their daily lives.....no matter what RUNOVRU belives. The monetary system is here, it's not going anywhere....(unless we have another mass extinction like the dinosaurs experienced and we are forced into basic levels of survival)....we all participate in this system. Some put in more than they take back....others, just the opposite. We cant force everyone to be equal (no matter how hard our government tries)...but those that just take from this system should be shown that it is not fair to those that give their fair share. Being required to follow a general set of rules for their assitance is not a bad thing...IMO.

Nobody can do everything, so naturally you're going to want to work a deal with someone who does something you can't.

The problem lies not with those that can't do things, its with those that won't.

There used to be a solution for those that don't or didn't want to, they died. Now we coddle them and say it's not their fault that they're lazy.

After a few brewskies and some reflection, Ive come to realize that sometimes I hate the humanitarian in me. After 14yrs in the US workforce not once have I ever requested or recieved govt "assistance", nor do I plan on it. Yet here I am defending things that do not directly affect me, simply on silly little things like ideals.

Im gonna go ahead with the majority of self-centered americans and say F it! Doesnt make a difference to me!!!

FYI I'm more disgruntled than self-centered, or less self-centered. Maybe equally?
Anyways I donate stuff to centers. All you do is talk.
