Land Cruiser 79 Hard Body by Trailworx Garage

Loving the time off work this week.

Grabbed some foam I had floating around in the Trailworx Garage, and used some vinyl previously acquired for just this purpose and whipped up a new Roof Top Tent.

OK, that looks good, now we need some doors on the sides.

That should do the trick. Those doors are the new type that you can never break into. Ever.

Needed a little something to go behind the tent on the roof.

The perfect spot for some recovery tools.

Always more to do SIGH.

Cheers

OK, decided I needed a hole in the side of the new canopy.

Nice hole right?????

Well after I glue on a new backing, drill a small hole and install the gas cap for the secondary fuel tank, it won't be a hole anymore.

Then I spent a fair bit of time fabricating and installing a few storage options. Can't have too much storage in an overland rig can you?

Next up was some sill protection from all those nasty rocks.

Functional and looks good too! Winning!!

Oh, and I placed an order with Trailworx Garage to fabricate a custom front bar and sliders, but apparently there is some sort of delay. Some crap about being busy.

So while I have to wait for that to be done, I made a couple of mods to the stock front bar to create some clearance out on the trails.

Crude but effective!!!!

Now to finish off these pesky gaps in the front of the canopy behind the cab doors.

As you can see this didn't work out as expected.

So I tried a different option.

Soooo very close now!!!!

Man, this thing is looking killer!
Though I love the rooftop tent, I reckon it needs a "KINGS" logo on either side for the ultimate touch! :lmao:

Fantastic job; almost ready for the Atlas :)

Thanks, getting closer every day.

Glad you like it.

Nice build mate.

Ahhhh, a Naked Land Cruiser!!!!!! Please avert your eyes if you don't want to see one just like everyone elses LOL

The first reason for removing the back was to finish up the secondary fuel filler.

I just used a small square to make a backing piece.

Then I added some more Diamond Plate to the rear. In my test drive this cleared the majority of the time, but got a couple of marks, so some protection is needed.

I think it looks the part too.

I also started rounding off the edges a bit as I get ready to paint it all.

I can paint it before I do the interior, but we shall see how things go.

I picked up the paint on the way home from work on Friday.

It was too hot to get out into the garage so I relaxed in the A/C and watched the TV haha.

Saturday was also going to be a hot one, so I got out in the morning before heat took hold.

I stripped all the parts off and unbolted all the panels etc. I rubbed the cab, doors and bonnet down just to remove the gloss and allow the paint to adhere.

First step is some Rustoleum grey primer.

The primer went on nice and smooth so it was time to lay down some colour.

Now the chosen paint is Cardinal Red by Rustoleum. My phone doesn't capture it well in bright sunlight. It is a Maroon colour in person. LOL.

It was hard, but I was very good, and left the paint to cure for over 24 hours.

I went wheeling this morning so kept myself pre occupied, but when I got home this afternoon I made a start on assembling it.

Now this is cool. This comes with the body and is actually Stainless.

It goes here using the supplied double sided tape.

I took my time, just enjoying the process.

I tell you what though, there is some REALLY tiny hardware with this body.

I fluked getting the window trim sticker into the right place LOL.

I prefer open windows when out on the trail so sorted that out too.

I swapped in scale hardware where I could.

And this is where I got up to tonight.

Only a couple more things to do on the cab.

Sill have to build an interior too haha.

I am entirely innocent of guilt in this regard!!!

Coming along quite nicely!
Look forward to seeing it all put back together.

As requested.

Me too. I ordered one after seeing this thread. Great looking build here. I'm sub'd to see how this one turns out.

Entirely blameless here.

******************************************************************

I added some final details to the cab including the side markers and installed the dash.

Speaking of the dash, it was WAY too shiny.

So I painted it flat black before applying the supplied decals in RHD of course.

I did find the steering wheel was also too close to the dash, so installed a longer steering column.

Here it is installed. Ignore all the wires.

Next I finished assembling the rear box.

Kinda exciting to see the parts together!!

I installed the lights and the spare Toyota emblem in the rear.

Bolted down the recovery gear on the tool rack. Hmmm, need some MaxTrax too.

And here we have the mostly finished truck, read for it's first official outing this weekend.

Sorry, but there are a few pics.

And of course the obligatory flex shots, and it's not even Friday.

Like my other builds this will progress as time goes by.

Provided I don't get cooked in the garage by the hot weather, I would like to get an interior done and find a driver to suit.

There are other minor details I want to add, and of course the front bull bar and sliders are high on that list.

If all goes well I will get some video and pictures of this out on the trail this weekend.

Mine arrived today. Woot!

Sweet!!! Is it done yet???

Awesome work, love it!

Thanks!!

*******************************************************

I couldn't stop thinking there was something missing and unfinished regarding the box.

It just needed a bit MORE to sell the reality.

After much sitting, staring, drinking, eating, more staring, searching google images I had an idea.

A little teeny weeny idea.

But first, this is the result. Can you see what has changed????

This is a before pic.

after pic.

Some fake latches on the the fake doors make the doors look functional!!!

It really amazes me how such small details can make a huge difference.

I made the latches out of thin alloy sheeting. I had to cut out and hand file every piece.

Now, time to focus on the interior.

This is an awesome build, very unique and well done! I have been anxious to get mine going, but unfortunately I got shorted numerous parts and waiting on AsiaTees/Killerbody to sort it out - missing the entire chrome parts tree, the rear window guard, and that part D for the tailgate. :(

Very comprehensive build up. I'm so tempted to purchase the body set. I would be so worried about scratching such awesome work. Never even crossed my mind to think up a rear conversion like that. Thanks for sharing one I could be attempted to try myself. Copying is a form of flattery they say ;)

Yeah, I was lucky and nothing was missing from mine. Hope you have it all sorted now.

Part of the reason I share my builds is to give others ideas and to inspire you guys to have a go.

I've wanted one of these for a long time. Unfortunately the NA market missed out on a lot of the cool stuff from Toyota.

They are a dime a dozen here in Australia LOL.

****************************************************************

I attended a local comp 1.5hrs south of Sydney with the Illawarra Crawlers.

I took the LC79 along for the day for a bit of test driving and show and tell, but before I went I checked the axles were greased. While I had the diff covers off I hit them with a coat of matt black.

The red anodised look, clashed terribly with the paint LOL.

The fellas were all keen to have a look, and the response was great.

After the Class 1 courses were done for the day, I test drove the LC79 around them.

I could drive 90% of the gates with care and a few extra reverses LOL.

Here are some pics from the day.

Overall it drives great. It needs a bit more front weight bias, but until the interior and driver are in and I build the front bar and add the winch I will leave it.

Next on the to do list was to build a hitch.

I started with some angle alloy and started hacking away.

At this point I realised that I would not be able to fit the trailer on there. No room.

So I redesigned it with a removable tongue. A much better solution for when not towing a trailer.

I headed out to look at an explored track with two of my best scale trail mates.

5 hours and a boring trail later, we made it back home.

But it did test the endurance of the rig.

Here are a couple of pics from that adventure.

Psst, the Jeep broke twice!!! LOL

Cheers

Nice looking rig man, love all the custom work with the back bed.

Quick question on the trailer. I am about to start a scale build of my 1:1 Jeep and 1942 T3 Bantam trailer. The question is, how did you make the axle for the trailer?

Oh and on the Jeep breaking, that is just what they do LOL and we Jeepers still love them!

Thank you. Might have an update on the interior this weekend.

Re the trailer axle, this should help.
