laptop hard drive tech question

I'm hoping that there are some good tech guys/gals on here, I need some advice.

Quick background- last weekend my laptop was loading pages very slowly, so much so that it invoked my wrath, a swift right handed fist slam into the touch pad thingy sending the laptop into death throws. The next day I started to access the damage. The touch pad thing was bent, but the worst news was that the harddrive didn't seem to be working. I popped it out and saw that the metal cover was bent.

I removed the cover and saw that the upper wiper arm was bent badly. I tried to GENTLY pry it back in shape but it immediately snapped on me. My immediate thought was : there's goes any chance of getting those files..."

Yesterday whilst cruising Craigslist I found a local guy selling a A105 series laptop for only $20, it had a busted screen and missing the CD player, but it had a working hard drive which would get me back up and running. 1 day later, I'm using the transplanted parts on my old laptop to write this. It also gave me an idea, which is the main point/question to this post.

If I found another used hard drive, would it be possible to transplant the hard drive discs into the newer hard drive and retrieve the lost data from the broken hard drive?

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

yeah since you opened it ina non clean room type enviroment and msot likely touched the silver platters it's gone. now you can get in contact with a company like drive savers but I tell you now. unless the is worth $5000 then I wouldnt worry with it. drivesavers is vary very exspensive.

+1, there are a number of companies that can retrieve the data, but it's not cheap.
So.......what is the lost data worth to you?? I would look on www.CNET.com to find vendors that can get it back for you.8)

wow, none of you are helping with his question.

risky buisness, but yes, it is very possible, since the data is "gone" anyway, the risk invloved is very worth it, if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out, but it can work, good luck "thumbsup"

(you probably know this, but you would need the same make/model of hard drive)

If your data is worth the money send it to a data recovery specialist. If it is more you would like to have it but not a big deal and you are fine with working with tiny parts and tight tolerances then why not give it a shot. Opening the drive has introduced dust which it will not be happy with but you may get it running long enough to get something off of the drive. But they do have to be exact matches.
