Nice attempt at lightning photography! Avoid camera shake by using a tripod. Does your camera have manual settings, or is it a simple point-and-shoot with only automatic mode?
To get decent lightning photos, you basically have to set the camera on a tripod, open the shutter for 5-15 seconds (depending on the aperture and current lighting), and hope that while the shutter is open, lightning happens to strike where you've aimed the camera.
Here's a shot I took a few years ago during a rare lightning storm in the SF Bay Area:
The shutter was open for 10 seconds and caught this lightning arcing across the sky. I spent about 3 hours taking pictures, and got dozens of shots of just boring mountains, clouds, and city lights, but only about 5 shots of lightning that were worth keeping.
