"Like" Button

I don't care one way or the other, but I'm not buying for one second that the Like button was hurting the forum.

How is it hard to understand that this place costs money to run? The number of daily/weekly/monthly posts is directly related to what adsense pays to advertise so less posting and more clicking the like button means revenue went down.

We’re all struggling with any reliable correlation being tied to the like button rather than just the decline of forums in general. Especially when so many other improvements could have been made, and other standard expectations (like deleting spam) still isn’t happening.

It’s been made clear though that the owner’s priority is generating revenue from our content rather than keeping members happy here. Maybe down the road this place will be owned by someone that actually posts here and cares about the quality of the experience here. Until then, it’s his wallet, so I’m going to try and make the best of it and I hope we see everyone else sticking around and contributing more too, emoji and ‘nice turk’ responses be damned.

It's a pretty bold assumption to think that someone who had nothing to offer more than clicking the Like button will now suddenly start commenting.

So Jason and badger should just eat the cost of keeping the lights on around here out of the goodness of their hearts?

I agree that it has been annoying to have absentee owners but at least now we are getting an admin that will take care of things on the day to day and keep things moving forward. Yourself and 10 or so others feelings about the like button aren't likely to change anything.

I'd rather have Rcc here than the like button, I used it on occasion and miss it a bit but I do find myself posting more.

I said quite the opposite.

But I do believe that improving the experience here would generate more members, and in turn paid memberships while simultaneously having a postive impact on traffic and post count, which seems to be the only claimed benefit of removing the like button.

WT, I know you can count, it’s much more than 10 people. If it wasn’t a majority of the community here this thread wouldn’t be where it is. We know it’s not changing anything, which is basically what I said in the post you quoted.

It is also a bold assumption to think a click of the like button is all they had to offer in the first place.

There are some (generally noobies) that don't have a lot to offer but a like of encouragement but many of the members with knowledge and experience have fallen back on the like button as well and that's where the issue lies.

Looks like about 57 individual people have posted in this thread. Let's say 50 of those want the like button back. That's a very strong majority indeed. Now let's look at the 9ther numbers that show who has been on rcc in the last 24 hours. 1340 members and over 10,000 guests have stopped by and not said anything about not having an like button. That majority just turned to nothing.

Today the screaming minority gets the headlines in the news but this place isn't NBC so the silent majority still rules.

That's a huge assumption. There are way too many variables to make that statement. I'm not saying to keep it, just that the owners picked a dumb way to start these changes. No announcement of "hey members, we're going to make some changes soon, here's some of the ideas we're working on " or anything, just a new mod being given the task of announcing a take away, and a vague statement of "we're working on other things, I agree with some of you guys, but I don't know if/when that's going to happen".

Not exactly confidence inspiring.

It really sounds like they're taking action with no plan. That's no way to improve a business, especially one that relies on customers supplying the product.

While there are certainly more important things in life to get fired up about I wonder if a “study” was done. Is there data that supports no like button equals more activity? Or is this a shot in the dark?

That assumption is in direct retort to another assumption.

For years this place has slipped slowly into the abyss and few said anything but the moment something trivial happens a few people lose their shit.

I would argue that the reaction has more to do with how it's being done rather than what's being done. It's easier for people to just react to a given premise or action than to stop and think about why or how that situation or premise is in play.

To me, the premise is flawed

The like button showed up one day and disappeared the same way. The admin giveth and the admin taketh away.

Badger is going to get it to me so I can share it here...because from what I know of now, it actually is...

Regardless, Ads contribute to keeping the lights on here...SOOOOO when someone clicks onto RCC there is an Ad in the top right, when they click on a sub section that Ad changes, and when they click on a thread that Ad changes. When you click to reply, screen refreshes again and guess was what? there is Ads... and when you submit that reply...do we see a pattern here yet???

Ya know what happens you enter a thread and only click the like button??

I hope that clears things up....

LOL not a new mod....

Gonna try/attempt to comment on this part ....... While I agree the vendor fee is steep at 100$ for the return we get currently I will say 10 years ago it was worth it.

On your part about 1 guy making 5 for the fun of it or what ever. Back in the day there was lots of problems with guys 'just making them for friends' that snowballed into forum issues. Keyboard heros bringing private message business public and just creating headaches for everyone. In the end of it the seller was the crook and the buyer pretty much was screwed.

Another long history of problems was the blatant copying. Why should I design, test and produce a part and come here to sell it then have some jackhoff steal the idea and make a few for paying friends? The vendor fee doesnt protect me from the internet theft but it helps protect me selling the product here.

We've had guys even try the 'if anyone wants one pm me' route and have seen that turn into back door sales gone wrong. It helps everyone in the big picture. But thats not saying you cant ask people to make you something just becuase they arent a blue star vendor. Ive asked people in the past if they could make me something they had because I liked it or could use it on a project. Just remember and be mindful its always buyer beware so you are taking the risk, not the forums.

If the maker wants to charge you for materials or what ever thats always between you two. If the maker wants to backdoor pedal it to a mass amount then thats where it becomes sketchy and bad if caught.

Hope that helps ya .... and i read evrything correctly.
that all makes alot of sence i never thought about the copying and back door fighting coming out in to the open
