Who has personally witnesed a lipo burst into flames for no aparent reason . If you could give a short description of the application that would be great. Example ... I have , charging on my stove @ 1c after an hour cool down time. ( just an example). Thanks in advance - Bob

First, charing isnt "for no apparent reason"....

Second, ON THE STOVE??
Missed the ( Just an examle story ) part . I have never seen a lipo go up and didnt know about the dangers when I was jumping soft packs in my rustler at 40 mph .

I have had one of the little 3.7v packs (Might have been a Common Sense pack, I can't remember at the moment) light off at work in the E-Flite MCX charger at work. Of course I happened to be a couple feet away working with a customer and it was next to a large banner showing the HobbyTown version of HPI's E-Firestorm:roll: Luckily all it did was melt part of the case and destroy that battery. It also let off with a loud fizzing like noise and smoked like a worked over diesel for a short period of time. Now I have owned a couple NiMH packs that had a cell explode in my E-Revo....blew the right side battery door clean off the damn truck twice:evil:

Had a 5S 5000 pack go up on me once. Carbon-fiber battery tray (home-made deal) had just enough of an edge to poke a hole in the pack, and that's all she wrote.

I dont think you'll find a lipo that just burst into flames while sitting on a desk. You'll either need to be charging or discharging them.

The only problem I had with a lipo was in my MRC. I had it sitting at the start gate for our state finals (my last course). I was waiting for another guy to finish the course. I wasnt paying attention and the POS Novak system, began glitching and wedged the truck under a large rock. I am assuming high current draw from the motor puffed the pack and melted damn near ever wire in the system. It didnt stop until it got so hot that it desoldered one of the ESC wires. Even then, still no fire from the lipo. That secured my faith in lipos......and ended my faith in Novak products.

Yes but there was physical damage to your pack . I looking for the guy who was unplugged waiting for the next run and the pack just went up in a blaze . I was talking to a guy and he said to be carefull with my lipos because hes seen so many just start ablaze sitting there or in mid air or after a perfect landing. So I wanted to know if anyone else has experienced anything like this . This was his quote - his name . Im not looking to start any trouble , and after the Brown Foam post I have to look at everything you guys say twice . so Does this sound legit? "Your family, house, belongings your choice "thumbsup"

I have personally witnessed LiPo's ignite for no apparent reason over 20 mins after a flight.
I've witnessed LiPo's appear to self ignite right after a smooth landing, while being strapped into a fuselage, while being charged and while being stored.

I watched a club member safely land his plane, remove his LiPo, place it carefully into his Tx case, sat and talked to him for a few mins over a coffee then help as much as i could after we noticed smoke coming out of his car.

Most batteries have the capacity to ignite, but because of the thin membrane used in LiPo's though then tend to be more unpredictable than say NiMh's.
Over discharge, an impact in the wrong spot can both cause invisible damage that can cause self ignition at pretty much any time.

Personally i place my LiPo's on a LiPo bag, then inside a small petty cash type lockable tin.
At home i then store this tin in the fireplace or if this is being used out on the balcony well aware from anything flammable.
Being a responsible adult who loves his family i am of the opinion that 40 secs extra work and $20 are both s a small investment if it helps me keep my family a little safer "thumbsup"

We all have different experiences, ethics and levels of responsibility though so as i say your family, house, belongings etc your choice "thumbsup"
If i read something had happened and i hadn't said anything i would have kicked meself, my conscience is clear now though "thumbsup""

I've never had one explode or catch fire, but I've had several that have puffed or dropped a cell. Every time it was because I either pushed them too hard, or let them sit fully charged a month or more (oops ).

Lipo's don't spontaneously ignite. Somewhere, somehow, they have to be abused. Otherwise they'd be going off all the time with no warning and we'd still be using nickle packs because lipo's are too dangerous.

I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. "thumbsup"

I know. I still have those pics :flipoff:

And carbon fiber is a pretty good conductor. Not as bad as driving a nail into it, but close. That's the only pack I've seen ignite.

You really need to get on the brown foam bandwagon, it's good shit.
