Looking to buy an AR-15

I am thinking out getting myself an .223 AR15. I am not too knowledgeable on these guns. I am looking to stay under $1000. I have seen that it's best to just buy a stripped lower and then build from there. This will be just used for plinking. I would like to add some sort of optic. What would be a good style upper to run...A2 or Flat Top? Anyone have any pics of what they have and the specs?

I'd contact Knife. I saw in a couple different posts that he has a FEW AR's and did/does have an online store.

I work for a distribution center that sells nothing but gun related stuff.
MidWay USA

I have built around 10-12 ar-15's ranging from $650 up to $2000

So here is what I recommend for someone wanting to save some money and have a fun gun.

Pick one of these kits, buy a stripped lower, some optics if you don't want to use the iron sights, build the gun and start shooting.

Also here is a schematic for your build. Real easy.

I take it those kits have to be shipped to an FFL dealer?

I've had nothing but good luck with MidwayUSA, fast shipping and good prices. I bought some Volquartsen goodies for my 10/22 through them, plan on buying more.

Thats another option if you just want a plinker, Ruger 10/22. Just as much aftermarket support for them as an AR.

DPMS makes a nice one from what I understand. I believe you can pick one up for around a grand. My boss and buddy both have one in the .223 flavor. Fun guns to shoot!

I'm really fond of my rock river arms ar... pieced it together for under $800. Checkout rbprecision.com, krista will hook you up (thought you will want to get the lower local)

Get an AK. :flipoff:

But if you have to have an AR the advice given is pretty good. Midway is a great store with good CS but their prices aren't hard to beat.

Any AR from Rock River, Bushmaster, Stag, or CMMG would be a good choice. You can even pick up a Colt 6920 for around a grand.

I would go with an A3 upper unless you want the old school look of an A2.

DPMS makes a decent budget AR (as does Olympic Arms) but I wouldn't pay anywhere near a grand for one.

I've been buying and selling guns for over 15 years and have owned most of the above mentioned brands. If you have any specific questions feel free to shoot me a PM. "thumbsup"

constantmotion, what type of shooting do you plan on doing with it? Or is there a "look" you are going for?

Just target shooting/plinking. I like that whole tactical look. I like the A2 uppers for the look, but I have read that it's easier to get a flat rail and then add it if wanted. Easier to add than take away.

I don't know if Model 1 Sales models are any good but they have a descent price w/o Lower....http://www.model1sales.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=208

One question that I have....what is "forward assist and what does it do?

Lots of people use Model 1 stuff. It may not be top tier but it gets the job done. Forward assist is the little plunger button on the back of the upper receiver. You can use it to seat the bolt if for some reason a dirty chamber or something else is preventing the bolt from closing all the way. Or if you are like me and out hunting but dont want to let the bolt slam into battery making lots of noise, you can ease it down with the charging handle and then finish closing the bolt with the forward assist.

The chick with the Hello Kitty AR is a member of California gun forum I belong to. All those parts are duracoated. The funky grip is called a Monster Man grip to get around the assault weapon laws to be able to use detachable high capacity magazines.

Look at www.Del-Ton.com as well.

I have a BushMaster that Im pretty happy with

I have changed it a little since this pic was taken though. I have added a collapsible stock and a NcStar tactical sight to it. I bought this in '05 and if I remember right I only paid around 600.00 for it. I bought a .223 AK a few years ago and other than it dinging the brass up, it is a lot more accurate than the AR. The AR is still my favorite though.
A few more pics though(with my Ruger Mini-14)

My AK with my Marlin 45-70. (I won the 45-70 at a Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation banquet in '07. It was the second banquet rifle I have won, I also have a Winchester 44 in the 1894 rifle).
