Had to poke around on the inside. I can't leave anything alone.....

Pulled the rear axle apart.

All that lube was in there. Good deal. There are in fact, 5 or 6 shims on EITHER side of the worm. However mine had about +/- 5 thousandths play already so I left it alone. Probably best to check it. You can't check out at the axles as they have about 10thou there too. Added more lube, put it back together.

Trans teardown. This thing is a trip.

I got #775. Had to remove the sticker to open her up.

Idler gear and slipper.

The slipper is TINY, smaller than a dime. No spring. So no true adjustment as you're relying on the locknut for all the tension.

She's apart.

Now HERE is something depressing.....

The output is solid steel. The inner part of the dig is P L A S T I C! wtf? No wonder they said, avoid shifting on the fly. DEFINITELY listen to them when they tell you this!

Almost back together...

Back in the truck now.

See my other thread for CVD/Hack fix.

Why would Losi make it plastic? That is not wise. I am becoming more and more happy that I did not purchase a Losi. Thank you for the comprehensive break down"thumbsup".

With the low speed of the worm axles most of the dig shifting will be at low rpm though. Plastic was a bad idea for sure though....Thanks Freq for the picts"thumbsup"

Give it a few months, I'm sure Losi or the aftermarket will have some cool stuff coming soon. After seeing one Saturday, I think they are good, they just have the typical teething problems of a new product.

I see another potential problem. They should put thrust bearings on both sides of the worm gear. Those radial bearings are not made to take much thrust loading. Might even reduce friction a little.

Kenny, you kind of have it backwards. Since the worms have all the reduction your trans is moving way fast! Even when moving slow your trans will be cooking in comparison to a "normal" trans. So it won't be "low speed" but more of low torque.

Your right! Thinking backwards again:lol: Thanks daddy-0"thumbsup"

just thrust bearings will not work.
We need angular contact thrust bearings as they will work well for screw type assemblies. The worm gears have stress loads in radial and thrust, just a thrust bearing will not work.

And yes I am looking as we speak

SKF doesnt make anything that small

You are right thrust bearings alone will not work. I will rephrase, both thrust and radial at both ends of the worm. As far as I've been able to dig up no one makes tapered bearings that small. I tried to find some that I could use for the main shaft (5mm) on my heli. If you know of something please let me know where I can get some."thumbsup"
Kevin

Really like your gear jelly.

Uhh...picture showing dig cogs.... description says those are plastic. Nobody said anything about the worm being plastic.

Heres my axle, not nearly as much grease, my front had almost none! And ya, my trany is already making noise..

While that cog is plastic,(I wanted steel too ) I haven't had any issues shifting on the fly. Set your dig endpoints and have at it, it will shift just fine8)

Also, there should be 3 shims on either side of the worm gear main shaft.

Try Timken, or NSK as they tend to cover the bases that SKF may not.
