Lt conversion link question

I'm mid way through converting to the lt using the rc car action article and I'm attaching the links for the suspension, why all the pre-load on the shocks? IMO the links need to be way shorter to allow for full articulation? Anyone have an opinion?

Shorter links are just what I made. The links went from 88mm to about half that. After running it I can see why the guys at rc action went with so much preload. With the 88mm links you can pull wheelies and hit jumps like a stadium truck. But i'm a trail guy so I didnt care about that stuff. The shorted links require you screw down the shock tension quite a bit but now I get full articulation. While I was at it I added some spacers on the suspension arms at add an extra inch of width and a half inch of hight. I also put some stiffer foam on the outside of the tires to help counteract the roll when side hilling. It gives the tires a bit of an odd shape but what a difference it makes. Just from playing in the backyard the LT reminds me of the old International Scout I had: a little goofy looking but tuff as a bull. Plan on taking it to the mountain tomorrow to really test it. The only thing that I still need to work on are the servo gards. They tend to get stuck on things, so a bit of a smoother design might be in order.

I'll post pics if anyones interested

Wish I had seen this earlier, but I don't use this site much at all. I used the arms, steering links and suspension links from a Slayer Pro. I then cut down the drive shafts and did any needed grinding to the arms for clearance. The only problem is that the stock springs are way too stiff for this setup because the short arms have far less leverage than the original monster truck style setup. I spend more tire experimenting with springs than performing the conversion.

I still use this truck often and absolutely love it. Glad to see other Summit LT trucks.

I see you're in Springfield. Do you ever go to R/C Madness in Enfield, CT?

Yea I had picked up some softer springs but the slayer links where so long that they compressed the springs so I shortened them quite a bit. Only had a chance to take it out once but can't wait to go again.

I head over r/c madness when they're having a big event but normally I'm deep in the woods with a truck

A cool place to run the Summits is Burr Pond State Park in CT. It's about 40 minutes from me and about an hour from the Springfield area. If you ever want to run with another Summit, let me know. I'd love to make a video of it for Rc Truck Stop.
