I'm a big fan of Proline Giant Tracs. I like the stock Clod size diameter, less strain on the drive line, and LOVE their traction. However, this has prevented me from running knuckle mounted battery packs...until now.
I did some testing and found that I was using about 400-500 mah a run. This suprized me, I thought a couple of TG servos and a pair of lathe motors would draw more. I hooked up Buster's spare 1050 mah 8-cell 2/3A pack and it lasted about 15 minutes. I measured and mocked up a dummy pack and discovered that it was going to be a tight fit, that's what she said. After weighing the pros and cons, I ordered up a brick of Venom 1200 mah 2/3As from Tower for $50.00. Along with the needed battery bars, plugs and wire it came to 28 bucks a pack.
The weight differance between my old 6-cell sub-C saddle and the 2/3A knuckle packs is 1 lbs vs 7.5 oz !!! The lower CG is AMAZING !!!
I had to make them easy to change so I stared with a mounting wing on each knuckle.
The wirering needed some slack and a Dean's plug the ease installation.
I was right about the fit but they work !!! I did have to bolt the wheel hub to the rim, CVDs don't hold them on like stock axles. I drilled the bolt hole through one of the five nubs on the back of the rim and used a 3mm bolt and locknut. The zip tie used to hold them on is a reusable one but I found that it works fine just sliding it on and off.
