Ok guys, I just picked up this pretty sweet Mossberg today, 18.5in. barrel, 5+1 capacity with 3 inch shells. adjustable buttstock with side saddle to hold 5 extra shells. heat shield and a no slip foregrip.

I am new to this type of weapon, My other guns are hunting rifles and some revolvers.

I would like to know what you guys think about this weapon as a home defense weapon and just something to go out and shoot with.

What type of accessories would you rercommend at a reasonable budget, I would like some sort of optics, but not for sure what kind, I would also like to put a light on it also.

Here are some pics.

Thanks for looking.

Sweet little gun with big pop...shot some slug shells the other day, too much fun! Looks like you got the heat shield on yours, mine came without it.
I'm no gun expert but given it's size and weight I see it as a great home defense weapon...that's the reason I bought it!

Great home defense weapon. One accessory I'd consider is a fore grip light. If the going gets rough a door breach muzzle break could come in handy. Specially if the zombies attack.

1st shotty I ever owned was a Mossberg 500 Military. GREAT gun & I still have it. Since moving on to the Benelli M4 & Super Nova Tactical...she doesn't get a whole lotta play time tho.

As far as accessories...my opinion is no optics. The only optic I have & ever WOULD run on a shotty is a holographic type like the Eotech line. I currently have an XPS on the M4 but really don't care for it. Im old school in that regard I guess. The ghost ring sites are PLENTY for any uses I have for the scatter guns. Most of my ARs sport glass tho but thats a different story.

The only "accessories" I really run is a side saddle, Vickers 2 point tactical sling & for home defense...Surefire M80 picatinny foregrip with the X400 weapon light. They have great forends with built in switches & included lights for most pump shottys.

Other than that...AMMO. You can NEVER have too much ammo. You know...for zombies n stuff.

thanks guys! I have been looking at forends, with vertical grip and light.

I bought some light game load just to get the feel of the gun, next time I go to the shop I will pick up some 00 buckshot to keep it loaded.

Most of what I have read says the bead sight is simple and best for home defense, and the optics are good for range shooting, so I will probably keep the bead for now.

going to try and get out tomorrow and shoot a couple boxes through it.

I've got a Mossberg 500 that my dad handed down to me. We've used it for duck and goose hunting since I was very young. I think they are great guns, reliable and durable. "thumbsup"
I've been looking into getting the short barrel and collapsible stock to turn it into a zombie defense/fun shooter.

A flashlight would be my first. I got simple hourglass shaped clamp that holds my surefire, cheapest option but will scratch up barrel. Theirs fore stocks that hold lights, but like 400+. If you want a red dot, I run a speed bead/fast fire on my 1100 tac-4, it mount between butt and receiver. Their like 200+. A Blackhawk cheek pad tames recoil on face and will hold extra shells.A tritium(glows in the dark for years) front bead is a good option too.

I put a cheap led flashlight on my 12 with a set of scope mounts. Dug up a longer bolt to bolt them together. The barrel was slightly smaller in diameter so I put a wrap of a nylon web belt around the barrel then clamped the scope ring to it.

It off centers the light a little but it works, doing what I can with what i got.

The Mossberg 500 was a weapon that we could checkout of the armory when I was in the Marine Corps. It was stupidly reliable no matter how wet, sandy or abused it got. I had one with me during Desert Storm.

thanks guys, I will end up getting one of those surefire forends, just have to wait a little to get the money up.

Ive already got a little llist started, of things i want to get.

For a home defense gun I would put a tritium night sight on it, some sort of flashlight, buy a butt load of 2 3/4" buckshot for it and call it good. Only time I put any sort of optics on a shotgun is with a fully rifled barrel for shooting slugs.(deer hunting)

I can't fathom a shotgun for home defense. Too big for close quarters. Just my opinion.

Easier to aim than a hand gun if you use a shot round instead of a slug.

People will also claim that shotgun rack sound might scare intruders.

Don't get a laser...that just tells people where you are and where to shot at.

Flashlight is a good idea, strobing light is better because it confuses the intruder.

Impossible to beat a Mossberg for the price. As for using it for home defense. It's certainly not a bad choice. Isn't for me. Don't like the idea of using buck shot in my house, can't POSSIBLY know where all those pellets are going to go. Have multiple bedrooms with little ones sleeping? Pets roaming around the house? Just things to think about to determine what would work the best in the layout of your home.

This might stick out a couple more inches than someone aiming a handgun, plus this can be used as a battering ram,

I will never have to worry about scaring someone with the sound because there is always one in the chamber,

I only have to worry about my girlfriend, and she will probably be behind me with her hollow point loaded 9mm, dropping casings.

I am going to get a strobing flashlight, that seems like a good idea.

But i would choose a short 12 gauge over a pistol any day of the week for home defense.

Just my 2 cents.

Sounds good. 8)

I sometimes have my 1911 with night sites out, but my 1st choice is always a rifle. Handguns are good when you're out in public and you need to conceal it.. But in your home you want the best possible tool so why limit yourself? "thumbsup"
