My take on scale tow shackles

I made tow shackles and a tow hook :)

Hit the inside radius of the hook with a round file and that thing would be PERFECT...awesome idea and execution!

I plan on it...broke the file that would fit last week and haven't replaced it. It's hard to see in the picture but the inside radius is completely smooth...it's just that all of the edges need to be softened up (going to get some tools at lunch to do just that!).

I posted this pic in my Dingo build thread but a tip I have is to make a "mold" when bending the shackles so they all have the same shape....I used hex wrenches..

Here's another approach to making shackles. If you can braze, these are fairly quick and easy to make and end up looking very clean and professional (and if you can't braze, these are a very easy first-time project to learn with...) They are also tough enough to bash into rocks every single run yet still be ready for heavy-duty use when you need them...

1/8" steel rod bent 180*, with a straight piece brazed on top. The mounting brackets are formed from 1/16" sheet steel. Two 1/2" long coarse-thread allen screws per bracket are tapped into the frame rails, ensuring the shackles are fully functional.

Rears...

I made this jig to form the brackets, so all 4 would be the same size/shape without spending hours to make them the same by hand. Place the sheet in, line up the pieces, smack it with a hammer. Quick and easy...

Thanks for sharing, I just made some shackle out of aluminum welding rod, then found this thread. I think yours stronger.

And my Pulley & ground anchor made from copper soldering together.

+1 stolen!

Added some D shackle goodness. :)

Using 3.6mm and 1.6mm cotter pins (split pins to us Aussies). First attempt was a failure - trying to work out how to drill the hole without going out the side wall. I clamp the pin to a saw horse with a quick-clamp and then use a fine punch to make a small indent - just enough to get purchase on with a 1.5mm drill bit. I then carefully drill the whole way through and then wiggle the drill around a little to get the hole out to a bit over 1.6mm.

I then carefully spread the pin using two pairs of needle-nose pliers and cut it to length with some heavy side-cutters.

Takes me about 5mins to make one now. "thumbsup"

Ben. :)

Just finished up with mine. Used an old drill bit to punch a divit to get the hole in the middle. Little bit of cutting and filing later ...

I had to make a bracket to mount the shackle on my rear bumper since this RC4wd didnt have them, but it was easy with some scrap aluminum angle

Also played around with the front "stock" tow hook idea. Not pretty, but functional

Fanastic idea OP"thumbsup"

So I took some time after wheeling today to make myself a set of these things. I am really glad I found this thread before spending close to 40 bucks on a scale set. Thanks for posting the idea to make them!!!

I didn't have the tools to try tapping the holes so I just used the small nut and bolt approach.

Well I made some, need to use soft jaws in vice next time. drilled and taped the holes so I can just screw the bolt in. Also tried to make one out of aluminum with a file but not too happy with it. I'll make more out of cotter pins when I have time.

Those came out great, personally the impressions the vise made, make them looked really used, which in my case is what I like on a rig. May just do that to mine now "thumbsup"
