I wanna be Dave
So I have had a thread up on my local board for a while, but I figured I would post here. So this first post is just some copy and paste's of what I already had...
So after quite a while searching for the right Toyota to fill the void I have had for the past couple years, I have finally found something that I can love and appreciate.
This is the truck I was trying to re-create. I got it from Mitch(Dumptruck). When I owned it, I wasn't old enough to appreciate what I had. It was an 84' with a 22r, 5 speed, 5.29's, spool rear, lock-rite front, 35's, and high steer. There's a truck in my neighborhood that looks alot like it, and it was time to start looking for a new one.
So this is what I bought yesterday. It's an 85 with a cheapo 4" lift, and some 33's. It's pretty damn solid, and complete which is nice. Previous owner did a new head and timing chain set about 20k ago. Theres a little rust in the bed sides and tail gate, but for what I have been seeing lately, it is very minimal. Interior is really nice except the seats beat. The inside of the bed is pretty nice too.
I need to fiddle with the carb and possibly have it rebuilt, fix the oil leak, put some better tires on, convert it to power steering, Adjust the valves, and then do some upgrades. Later this week, I am buying a front trussed axle with high steer and 4.88's, and a rear 3rd with 4.88's and an aussie locker from Josh. My immediate goal is to have it mechanically sound, and be able to go do some lighter trails when I have the time. So I will take pics and post my progress as they come!

Not much of an update. The seat had a dingy ass cover on it that kept sliding when I hopped into the truck, so I wanted to cover the bottom part where the hole in the seat was. So I figured I would take a stab at a half assed re-upholstery job. It is a temp fix until I decide which bucket seats I want to install.
What it looked like.
Without the cover:
There was some foam in the seat cover that happened to be a perfect donor. The hole on the drivers side was significant enough that there needed to be a pad. I chose this retro material at walmart because it fit the era of the truck, and is pretty thick. Took the top half off, then just wrapped the bottom. Sip tied and used heavy wire to secure it to the places where the stock cover is on the bottom side of it. Been like this for a week now, and it is holding up nicely.
Also got my CB/PA and CD player installed, as well as some nice Kenwood dash speakers. The CB ended up not working, so I have another that I am going to install once it stops raining
Lastly, I picked up this nice tool box from a buddy WITH A really nice jerry can attached. Still need to mount it. But with this style, I can still rock a canopy during the winter, and keep the box.

A bit of an update. Some of you know that I had been complaining that my motor was making a loud tapping. It was making me nervous. I accidentally ran across an add on CL that was mis-spelled, and hopped on it. Found a complete 22r with a little 2wd 4 speed attached for 400 bucks. It was out of an 86, and everything was identical to my accessories. It even had a new clutch and a better running carb.
The guy I bought it from was probably the nicest and most honest guy I have dealt with on CL to date. He ended up being a co-worker of Clay. Kind of a small world. Anyhow, he wrecked this truck, and was just trying to make some money out of the parts. His father in-law bought it new, and he bought it from him in 2000 I think, and he took good care of it. It was a little greasy, but after I got it in, I gave the truck a real good douching and she came out oh-so clean.
Forgot to update a while back when I installed buckets from an 87 accord:
Here's what I brought home:
Out with the old:
And the new in, old on ground. It was by far the easiest and quickest swap I have done. Had the old one pulled and the new engine in and running in 11 hours. Then the next day I went through and adjusted the clutch, cleaned the engine and bay, then set the idle and timing. She runs so much better than my old motor did. More power too.
I can hear some exhaust leaking, and I am sure it's the injection tubes coming from the exhaust manifold to the intake. I can feel it leaking at the intake. So I need to put some new gaskets in, and hope that fixes the issue. Need to adjust the valves also. Otherwise, it's nice and quiet!
She might be going in for some new exhaust soon too. The exhaust on her now is rusted out, and sounds silly.
All cleaned up
Silly temp tach mounting to get the carb idling where I wanted her to lol.
Lastly, we took a trip to Hood as a maiden voyage. Since we are going camping this weekend, I wanted to put some miles on her before we drive way the hell up to Washington. The Huckleberry in has DANK food and shakes BTW
Now that I have the engine mostly sorted out, I plan on taking some time while I have some decent weather left, and start working on her more. Planning on maybe some Old Man Emu springs, brake lines, service the brakes and knuckles, install the power steering, cross over steering, gears and maybe a locker in the rear, as well as some other little odds and ends. But we will see if money and time allows.
