My un-exciting Toyota PU build

So I have had a thread up on my local board for a while, but I figured I would post here. So this first post is just some copy and paste's of what I already had...

So after quite a while searching for the right Toyota to fill the void I have had for the past couple years, I have finally found something that I can love and appreciate.

This is the truck I was trying to re-create. I got it from Mitch(Dumptruck). When I owned it, I wasn't old enough to appreciate what I had. It was an 84' with a 22r, 5 speed, 5.29's, spool rear, lock-rite front, 35's, and high steer. There's a truck in my neighborhood that looks alot like it, and it was time to start looking for a new one.

So this is what I bought yesterday. It's an 85 with a cheapo 4" lift, and some 33's. It's pretty damn solid, and complete which is nice. Previous owner did a new head and timing chain set about 20k ago. Theres a little rust in the bed sides and tail gate, but for what I have been seeing lately, it is very minimal. Interior is really nice except the seats beat. The inside of the bed is pretty nice too.

I need to fiddle with the carb and possibly have it rebuilt, fix the oil leak, put some better tires on, convert it to power steering, Adjust the valves, and then do some upgrades. Later this week, I am buying a front trussed axle with high steer and 4.88's, and a rear 3rd with 4.88's and an aussie locker from Josh. My immediate goal is to have it mechanically sound, and be able to go do some lighter trails when I have the time. So I will take pics and post my progress as they come!

Not much of an update. The seat had a dingy ass cover on it that kept sliding when I hopped into the truck, so I wanted to cover the bottom part where the hole in the seat was. So I figured I would take a stab at a half assed re-upholstery job. It is a temp fix until I decide which bucket seats I want to install.

What it looked like.

Without the cover:

There was some foam in the seat cover that happened to be a perfect donor. The hole on the drivers side was significant enough that there needed to be a pad. I chose this retro material at walmart because it fit the era of the truck, and is pretty thick. Took the top half off, then just wrapped the bottom. Sip tied and used heavy wire to secure it to the places where the stock cover is on the bottom side of it. Been like this for a week now, and it is holding up nicely.

Also got my CB/PA and CD player installed, as well as some nice Kenwood dash speakers. The CB ended up not working, so I have another that I am going to install once it stops raining

Lastly, I picked up this nice tool box from a buddy WITH A really nice jerry can attached. Still need to mount it. But with this style, I can still rock a canopy during the winter, and keep the box.

A bit of an update. Some of you know that I had been complaining that my motor was making a loud tapping. It was making me nervous. I accidentally ran across an add on CL that was mis-spelled, and hopped on it. Found a complete 22r with a little 2wd 4 speed attached for 400 bucks. It was out of an 86, and everything was identical to my accessories. It even had a new clutch and a better running carb.

The guy I bought it from was probably the nicest and most honest guy I have dealt with on CL to date. He ended up being a co-worker of Clay. Kind of a small world. Anyhow, he wrecked this truck, and was just trying to make some money out of the parts. His father in-law bought it new, and he bought it from him in 2000 I think, and he took good care of it. It was a little greasy, but after I got it in, I gave the truck a real good douching and she came out oh-so clean.

Forgot to update a while back when I installed buckets from an 87 accord:

Here's what I brought home:

Out with the old:

20120901_170622-2.jpg

And the new in, old on ground. It was by far the easiest and quickest swap I have done. Had the old one pulled and the new engine in and running in 11 hours. Then the next day I went through and adjusted the clutch, cleaned the engine and bay, then set the idle and timing. She runs so much better than my old motor did. More power too.

I can hear some exhaust leaking, and I am sure it's the injection tubes coming from the exhaust manifold to the intake. I can feel it leaking at the intake. So I need to put some new gaskets in, and hope that fixes the issue. Need to adjust the valves also. Otherwise, it's nice and quiet!

She might be going in for some new exhaust soon too. The exhaust on her now is rusted out, and sounds silly.

All cleaned up

Silly temp tach mounting to get the carb idling where I wanted her to lol.

Lastly, we took a trip to Hood as a maiden voyage. Since we are going camping this weekend, I wanted to put some miles on her before we drive way the hell up to Washington. The Huckleberry in has DANK food and shakes BTW

Now that I have the engine mostly sorted out, I plan on taking some time while I have some decent weather left, and start working on her more. Planning on maybe some Old Man Emu springs, brake lines, service the brakes and knuckles, install the power steering, cross over steering, gears and maybe a locker in the rear, as well as some other little odds and ends. But we will see if money and time allows.

And tonights update

So it's been a while since I have updated this thread. Truck has come a long ways since the last update.

It's got a decent list of newness...

-Old Man Emu springs F/R(Which rides super awesome)
-Doetsch Tech shocks F/R
-Stainless steel braided brake lines F/R
-New shock mounts on the axle F/R
-TG knuckle gusset kit in front
-TG high steer
-IFS box and power steering
-U-Bolt Flip Kits F/R
-Knuckle rebuild kits(not done yet)
-Used 33-2.50-15 original Goodyear MT/R on black steelies
-HID headlamp conversion
-Winch Bumper
-Smittybily XRC8 winch with synthetic line

She still has a little ways to go. But it's definitely rewarding as it is. On the list of things I would like to do before next summer is:

-Air lockers F/R
-T-Case gears
-New skid/cross member
-Sliders
-Rear Bumper
-Maybe a little body work
-Front driveline
-Push front axle 1-1.5" forward

I am planning on taking a road trip to Moab, The Grand Canyon, and Bryce Canyon next summer if all goes well, so I want to have it all finished up to have a few days of fun wheelin

Some pics of the work to the front end. Tom came out and helped me out :)

A couple months later, I threw my truck on a buddy's lift, and did the rear springs

While I was at his shop, we CNC plasma cut some brackets for my bumper. The bumper was one a friend made for his rig, but it was meant for a 3" body lift. So I cut off the stinger, and mounts, then made my own

MTR's mounted. Made it look so much better. And they were so much more quiet than the Schwab special tires

Good shot of it as of now, after we got a Chrismas tree

Also:

New magnaflow high flow cat, and flowmaster 50 series delta flow muffler, all done up with 2.25" tubing. Sounds great. Not raspy or obnoxious like some Toyotas I hear running around town here. No noise in the cab at all on the highway.

That's a sick front bumper, truck looks good! I have an 89 Cherokee that's lifted but I wanna build an older yota to really wheel and bash on without folding the unibody lol

I love the color. My 85 4Runner is the same...I think beige is one of the most overlooked exciting colors "thumbsup"

Nice work Chris!

Thanks Jeremy. Means alot coming from those glorious side burns!

I agree! I have always been infatuated with the tan. A family friend had one of the old big cherokee's in the 2 door flavor, with a straight 6 in the tan. He lifted it some, put black wheels on it, and it was super sexy to me. Kind of reminded me of some desert militia look or something.

The brown interior I am un-decided on though. I am considering installing heated Mazda 3 leather seats and center console, then dieing the rest black. But I am not sure how that would look. Dont want it to look like some sh1t redneck jobie

Chris, I hate you right now. Your Toy is awesome, simple and practical.
I used to have an 1983 Toy rollin on 35" Swamper TSL's. Unfortunately I had to sell it off due to, to many projects...

Keep up the good work "thumbsup""thumbsup"

Thanks man. That's what I am going for. Putting the hop ups in the places that matter most. Big tires dont mean much without traction. Plus, as it is, I cant hardly get into the damn thing, and it's only got about a 2.5" lift on worn out 33's. God damn short legs:lmao:

Only way my ass is getting into something on 37's as a DD, is if it's cut to hell, and slammed with links F/R.... That's not happening to this rig:ror:

Its been a while since I updated this.

Mid Jan, the head blew:evil:. Turns out the water jackets eroded into the fire ring on cyl 1/2. The motor hydro-locked. So luckily I had the old motor that I pulled, and it had a great head on it. Swapped the cam/rocker assy, had a machinist friend surface the head, and grind the valves/seats. Slapped that bad boy back on, and she runs great now. While the new head was going in, a good friend put in a new heater core for me.

This is a temp fix really. I am sure the engine will go many more miles, but I have made up my mind on a 3RZ swap, and in fact have started gathering parts and saving $$ for the swap. A buddy has all the stuff I need minus the motor mounts and other little tid bits, so I am stashing cash for that.

Before long, that will be in progress.

Also, I scored a great E-locker with 4:10's, the harness, and factory plugs/relays for 450. So that's going into the rear before long.

Stay tuned"thumbsup"
