so i got allie an MRC and we have been playing w/ logs, shoes, concrete squirrel door stop, anything to climb... so we wanted a course w/ alot of lines, kind of hard ones because we play until you flip and then switch drivers... well, i wanted it to be cheap so we dug out all of the foam from Christmas gifts and bought some mortar mix at lowes... heres what we did, i used a piece of cardboard from a refrigerator, duct taped various shape foams in place and then we used paper mache to cover it w/... well a variation of paper mache, i used heavy duty paper towels, the newspaper just didnt "drape" that well... i plan on covering this w/ mortar mix after it dries...

first we laid out a shape, this was just a rough outline... random pieces, just tape them down real good...

here what you need for the paste, 1:1 flour to water and one tablespoon of salt... mix well... send your wife to the store for a few hours, the mess is awful...

i used the blue shop towels because they are very absorbent and durable... i went back w/ some white household paper towels just for contrasting colors...

this is where i am right now... it will dry overnight and i will check it tomorrow to see if it is stiff enough for a top coat of mortar... total i might have $20 in everything i will use for this project... i used 10lbs of flour and almost two rolls of towels....

i have yet to coat it w/ concrete, or mortar, like for bricks, there is no gravel in it so it goes down way smoother... i bought a concrete brush, to put some texture in it... what you are seeing is just paper mache...

__ That's very Kool' thinking out of the box' brotha'. And keep us all posted as to how it all turn'd out for ya' as well. I myself just used chicken wire to support the Quik'-crete that i hand pack on top of all the chicken wire that I use to form all of my own indoor rock' crawling course out of . But I like this idea,... and I bet the wife would enjoy helping me out as to adding on to me course going about it all this way that' is if it work's out for you the way your thinking it all will. ~ol'Scoot'er~

how long did it take to mache it to were you at now, and can you take a pic with you or something next to it for a size reference? i like this idea me n my friends have no place to crawl between comps except my basement and doing this may work without taking up alot of room cuz you can make it in chunks then put it together like a puzzle then arrange any way ton make it a different course when you get bored with the original....."thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup".. Great idea man Whats the salt for btw?

i have no idea about the salt... thats just what the recipe said???

ive got maybe 2hrs in it like it is... and you are thinking exactly what i was, just something small that i can drag into the living room and put it away when we are not playing... i built one side where another peice could easily but up agaist it...

as afar as the chicken wire, i read about that but i wanted something that was a little easier to control the consistancy because i want it to be as light as possible...

heres a pic for reference, for us, we are playing w/ an MRC so this is plennty for a small living room course...

Looks good FnJimmy. Good seeing you on the site. Lots of great info here. Now we need to build a course at MMORV in the camping area. I have looked, there are some greast rocks at GBU, we just need a pickup.

holy crap dude!!! i love it!!!!!!!

I hate dragging rocks into the garage in winter :) esp if I need to work in there later.
This is a great idea!!!
Thanks for posting this up my man, now i want one, lol

so i finished it... total time about 4hrs... maybe 2 for the layout paper mache, and about 2 for the mortar... its freakin sick!!! im ready to build one in the shop...

i played on the course w/ just the paper and realized that i had one spot that was way to easy and one that would be physically impossible, so i made a few changes...

getting the hang of applying the cement... consistency is key...

Looks good. How heavy is that getting with the mortar? Little casters underneath may be handy.

The spray on "rock paint" works fairly well without adding much weight, though it may take a few cans, all depending on what you want. I've found that the Rustoleum brand works well, but the Valspar brand is better (considering application and finished product).

The salt is to help prevent mold while the flour-paste dries.

You may want to keep a few places nearly impossible, so your mountain can grow with your rigs as you tweak them...

**I see some "extras" on your cabinets - don't let the Missus see! ;)
