narrowing aluminum wheels

anyone ever narrow a set of aluminum wheels or have any ideas on how to do that besides welding them back together

i got a set of 40mm wide wheels i have been thinking of taking 5mm or 6mm out of the middle to make them fit the tires better

the inner beadlock ring should be easy enuff to do but the rim its self is were the challange might be
 
Without knowing what your wheels look like, I'd say you could turn them down on a lathe if there’s enough material.

i would only be able to cut down the back part and the inside lock ring the inside ring is easy i guess i could use the cut out part on the inside if i have enuff clearence on the knuckles and jb weld it all back together but im not sure that will hold

I think your best bet will be finding someone with a TIG who can tack these back together. Its gonna discolor the barrel but it will hold better than glue.

EDIT: Now that I think about it the ring on the back side is under constant stress from clamping the beads of the tire so the glue will be under stress too.

Brazing? I feel like this will discolor the wheel even more but maybe it can be done cleanly?

You could also 3d print a new inner ring if you dont wont to modify it.

i havent had any luck brazing aluminum but i could always try again
i have the black ones so discoloration on the back side isent a issue



i havent tryed welding aluminum and i dont have the equipment to do that and paying someone else to do it for me would cost more than the wheels



maybe ill pick up a extra wheel to practice on
 
Call me little dark cloud because I’m going to rain on your parade. If the pic you show above is your wheel, you would have to cut behind the “tabs” and in front of the bead. You need a machine shop to perform that kind of surgery, by re-machining new rear sections. Or, have someone print a new center and rear wheel half if you don’t want something butchered together, if salvageable. Otherwise you will be scrapping these in pieces, frustrated beyond belief. As a ray of sunlight, you won’t have a set of destroyed wheels by opting for plan B.

Just had another thought:
Cut what you want off, but you will be rendering the inner headlock useless by drilling and tapping the center to the inner rim piece, in say 3 locations, after you shave down the center.

I narrowed a set of 2.2 Amazon beadlocks by printing a new clamp ring and inside ring… it was actually pretty straight forward, and held up for a few runs on a brushless trx6.

I ended up selling the rig after that so I don’t know how they would hold up long term, but I didn’t feel like there was too much stress on either of those parts. Not as much as the wheel face/hub.

Cutting and jb weld may be a viable option…

um kay thank you thats good to know when the tires get here ill do a test fit if i dont like how they fit ill get to cutting

i kinda want a spare anyway so ill probably order a single wheel and do a test run worst case i can use the wheel face for the spare i dont use the innerds for the spare tires anyway to save weight so even if it dosent work out its no loss i can still use it

so i cut one down by about 10mm i used the cut off section to reinforce and aline the 2 peices of the wheel
you almost cant see the seam so thats good i hope it holds
i still need to cut doen the inner ring but the main section is done

Incase anyone was wondering the job weld didn't hold first time I dropped the wheel it was in 2 prices again maybe someday I'll try aluminum brazing or if I ever get me a welder that can do aluminum I'll give that a try lol but I'm not gonna hold my breath most likely will just be the face of the spare tire
 
Who tries to narrow an alloy wheel when they don't even own the proper tools / or know the procedure necessary to do the job ?
I'm confused or rather mystified as to this thought process !? :shock:
Hopefully it will occur eventually one day in the future, if you source a tig welder ;-)

I don't need the whole wheel anyway just the wheel face for a spare tire so why not give it a try worst case it's just a scale accessory.
