Hello

After a LONG TIME AWAY I have returned. I am in the middle of hunting for parts for a scratch project a 1/6 WWII Schwimmwagon which was basically a on land and water capable scout car. The " Grandfather of the VW Bug".

I want to make it as realistic as possible so I need the Suspension and Steering and Drive from a Tamiya Sand Scorcher VW # 58452.

I have seen the complete old kits for sale BUT I don`t want to buy the entire kit and ONLY use the above parts. The rest would be useless to me.

The reason for that specific kit is the type of suspension, it is a match for the original vehicle.

Can anyone help me with these parts? I am looking for factory originals NOT upgraded high end parts.

Is there such a thing as 1/6 parts for the same as a Sand Scorcher VW ???

Please let me know if you can help OR have links to sources.

Thanks for your time and help.

If you buy a membership star or hit the 30 post mark, you would gain access and could post a want ad in the buy/sell section - no telling whether anyone here would have what you need though.

Your best bet would likely be ebay. I find that aftermarket or upgrade parts for Tamiya models can often be in the same price range as the originals - especially with something like the sand scorcher / buggy champ where the originals are already made of aluminium.

This guy has a lot of original parts available:

Also, I would like to point out a few things - Production on the VW beetle began in 1938 (after several years of prototypes), whereas the Schwimmwagen didn't have a prototype until late 1940, and hit production in 1942 - making it the Bug's child, not it's grandfather.

Also, I am fairly certain that both the Schwimmwagen 166 and it's predecessor, the Schwimmer 128 had 4wd - the sand scorcher front axle is not a drive axle, and would likely come in quite small for a 1/6 scale vehicle.
You need a vehicle width of about 9 3/4", and it looks like the wheels are the widest part - so you are going to need fairly wide axles.

Good job MrBlank, you beat me to it! Way to small for a 1/6th build.

Hello

I know that the 1/10 parts will be too small for my 1/6 project BUT I could modify some of the parts to be larger for my needs, Yes?????

Also I found plans for the Tamiya scorcher in 1/10 But they are 2WD, is there a similar model bug in 4WD that has a free downloadable manual?

Can anyone post me a link?

Thanks again for the help.
George

I take it you like the look of the front beam style suspension. I don't think that style generally lends itself to 4wd, although someone will likely correct me if I'm wrong.

As far as RC goes, most bugs you find probably won't have that style of suspension, 2wd or 4wd, as most chassis kits are designed to be used with multiple different bodies.

I did find a custom sand scorcher build with plenty of pics. It looks to me as though he made the front suspension himself - front beams should actually be fairly easy to replicate in any size, and then work in c-hubs, knuckles, and matching drive shafts and front trans from whatever model you choose. Just make sure you match the gear ratios between front and rear if you use axles from different models - and use a centre transmission.

Here is the 4wd scorcher build I mentioned:

A 1/6th scale Sand Scorcher would be AWESOME!!! 3D printing and fabrication skills could take care of that for sure.

Hi

I am in the hunt for the front suspension and steering from a Tamiya Sand Scorcher VW becaus eit is the same type used on a WWII German Scout car, Schwimmwagon, so that is what I am after.

If anyone can point me to a parts source, that would be Great!

Thanks again.

The ebay link I posted earlier takes you to a seller who has all of the necessary suspension components - they are all Tamiya originals, not aftermarket, just like you requested. As I've mentioned in earlier comments, they will be quite small for a 1/6 build, and you could probably make something yourself for a lot less. Did you read over my last comment / check the build link? I think something similar should work for your project.

Here is the ebay store link again with all the original sand scorcher parts you would need if you take that road.
