New build transmission frustrations

I finally was able to sit down and build my Cherokee SCX10II builders kit and I love it. I added a RC4WD front bumper, Scaler Fab slider skids and a few other bits and bobs but there is one frustrating issue. The transmission. After assembling it I noticed some serious drag and grinding. I hit the inter webs and saw the slop fix however after doing that, it created an issue that put a lot of drag on the transmission due to tightening the trans screws. After backing the screws off a bit there is a pronounced gap between the two trans halves in addition. Another issue is the transfer case. It has slop in the front / rear output shafts and more drag. It seems like the motor will burn out trying to just turn the transmission let alone the wheels. The front and rear duffs are butter smooth. Can someone help me out here with suggestions on this draggy crunchy transmission?

So I’m not sure what the diy fix is for the slop issue. But all I did was get the Vanquish top shaft replacement and have never had an issue.

Well, my OCD kicked in last night and I tore down the transmission. Starting from scratch I noticed some play in the lower output shaft of the trans. The shaft that has the larger of the two metal gears. I used a metal shim I had in my parts bin between the larger gear and the bearing which took care of the play and stopped the gear from roaming onto the shoulder of the smaller gear causing the grinding and drag. As top the top shaft and the slop issue, I took the advice of another thread on here to use a nail of the correct size to secure the plastic sleeve using the extra hole in the top shaft then I used heat shrink tube around it to keep it in place. With these couple of diy mods I was able to get the main transmission to a smooth and no drag state. A little adjustment of the tightness on the trans case screws also tweaked it enough to keep it smooth and have no gaps in the trans halves.
Next was the transfer case. Rebuilding that and turning the center gear around so that the cross pin was on the other side helped to smooth out those gears as well. The front and rear output shaft still had some plat to it but was taken up when installing the drive shaft couplers. A slight bit of drag was evident in that spot but is negligible. I loved putting this kit together but Axial needs to put some more time in the design of the transmission and the case. Poor plastic and not enough thought in the configuration of the shafts could have eliminated all the slop and potential for grinding gears.
