New Yeti Build - question on ESC, etc...

Building a new Yeti with my 13yo son. It's his first RC built.

Been out of RC since the NiMH days and just hit the leading edge of the brushless revolution (man, even the very first brushless motors were a huge leap).

Anyhow - here's what I've got and what I'm plotting:
Yeti kit -
~5000mha 3s LiPo >= 25C or so (not purchased yet)
DX4C AVC Radio system (already have)
HiTec Digital Servo - HS-5565MH HV (7.4v capable) (already have)
Holmes Puller Pro 540xl 3500kv Sensored (not purchased yet)
MMP ESC (not purchased yet)

Couple questions -
1.) Is the MMP the best choice? I'd like to stay sensored. Don't care much about waterproof - this will be mostly a basher in the dry. Max recommended vehicle weight is 6.5 lbs which is what the Yeti specs at. Don't really like the idea of starting maxed out if I don't have to.

2.) If I stay with the MMP, the BEC says it'll do 3.5A. The HiTec servo is rated at 2.7A @ 7.4v. Will the MMP output 7.4v to the servo? Is an external BEC a better choice?

3.) Decent reasonably priced/budget charger suggestions? I have and loved my old vintage Tekin BC112a - but it's from the NiCd days, it worked with NiMH but I'll obviously need something new for LiPo.

For a yeti.... MMX not MMP, more amperage as an external bec is given with a MMP . MMX allows drag adj on the fly, needs a special adaptor or cable for sensored running

Charger get a HItech X1 or X2....

I second the MMX. I run a BEC. Since you are using the DXRC I highly recommend using the AVC. Sucks you cant change the drag brake on the fly with AVC activated but it make driving the truck at high speeds so much fun. I can confidently run the truck 100 yds away.

Haha - AVC - precisely the reason I got the radio and digital high torque server - sounds cool & from the looks of the videos I've seen should help a ton with keeping this thing under control (esp for my son!). Great to hear some feedback on the AVC/Yeti combo

HH sells a special sensor cable for the mmx. no need to order the cc harness, which is just an adapter for std sensor cables.

On the charger you want to have the storage charge ability, cause LIPOs need to be charged to 3.8V per cell if you don't use it for a longer period.

all over a nice selection for your yeti. i would go with the mmx"thumbsup".

I'm running it with a tekin 3000
sensored , wish I had spent the extra on the MMX as I'm close to 9.5 lbs...

Good to hear you are getting your son into it!

IMO....

This is by no means a cheap system, but here's what I would recommend:

ESC: RX8 (Gen2, preferably, this will eliminate the need for a BEC.)
Motor: HD Pro 4 3000~
Servo: Quicker is better, but still need at least 250 oz-in @ .1 sec transit to 60 degrees or faster*.
Charger: I love hitec X4 for fun/basher, convenient.

**Really any crawler servo will do, these specs are really if you planned to run U4 with the rig eventually.

Just a suggestion, Castle stuff is good too, just when I'm paying 2/3's the price for Castle, I'd rather wait and get what I really want...don't forget the hotwire if you go that route.

From my experience, I started out with the RX8 Gen 2, I water proofed it and must not have gotten it perfect because I ended up shorting out it's capacitors. $180 down the drain. I bought a second and again waterproofed it with much more attention to detail....minor glitch after running thru a deep puddle. This time I got lucky and it survived. It now sit's on my shelf and I only bring it out when I'm going to the track.

I switched to the MMX and can now run under water and I have run it roof deep for more than 15 feet long.

I would also the PRO 4 HD in the 3500 kV version.

as for the servo I am running the Savox SA1230SG Coreless Digital Servo 0.16/499.9 at 6v. About $65.

Use liquid electrical tape on the exterior seams and all is water tight.
