me and my brother just bought a couple of axial's and in the build process now. questions for you guys.

i can buy a 8cell split 2/3 pack and mount it
or
lipo 2c 2100 pack.

does anyone prefer one over the other. why sticking with the 2/3 split packs as i see in most pics. because of optimal weight distribution or lower costs?

thanks for any advice.

with a 55t motor and stock gearing its about 20 to 30 minutes with a 1500 Mah pack
if you buy a standard sub C sized 6 cell you can reach up to 1 hour or even loner with like a 4200Mah one.
only problem with the sub c pack is that's heavy and more diffucult to lplace on your rig;-)

Go with Nihm 7or8 cell 2/3 1500 mah packs

I runing a 2 cell 2200 lipos in my ax10 stock gearing roster crawler and 45t and i get about a hour out of it. I've mounted it and a peice of a tupperware lid on the front upper links. And after using 3000 nimh then going to lipos i wont go back

It sounds like a lot of people are steering you away from lipo. If you feel like you can follow the directions on them, and take care of them, I'd go for the lipo. If you're given to abusing things, the NiMH might be better. I run a 3s 2100 lipo on my AX-10.

Im running a 7 cell NiMh pack at the moment but am woundering the same thing. I have been looking at Lipo's but they seem expensive.......Hmmmmm.

I would have gone lipo, but the nimh axle mount packs are $20 and a thunderpower two cell 2100 is $50. for $50 you can get two axle mount nimh and mounting plates from tcs. Plus, you have to have a special charger for lipo that alot of people dont have. they do make cheep lipo chargers and cheap lipos, but that is exactly what they are, cheep.

I use both, no need to stick to just one or another. Lipo is great for runtime and high voltage. Nimh is great for heavy saddle packs on the front. No need to spend $50 on a thunder power lipo for crawling either, a decent 3 cell 2100 can be had for $40. Compared to a hand built 10 cell elite pack it is the same price but with more runtime.

i say lipo
more punch and better runtimes
and when treated properly there apparently safer

That is a completely false statement. I have been flying and using Lipo for a few years. These are very dangerous batteries if not handled properly. Puncture a cell and you have a good possibility of a volitile fire on our hands. Over amp them and you can puff a cell and it will burst into a volitile fire. Drawing them down too far will cause a cell to be destroyed thus causing it to puff or burst if you try to charge it.

If you go Lipo then make sure you treat them like a new born child or they may bite you and hard.

I had the same questions. Upon my reading and others' reviews, I went NiMh. I e-mailed Mike @ Cheap Battery Packs.com, and he steered me in the right direction. I wound up with an 8 cell Elite 1500. It works just fine. I'm not competing yet, so I don't care. The issues of volatility in the lipos just isn't worth it to me.....at least not right now.

I have bent and punctured many lipo without fire. They are most dangerous when charging improperly. On the other hand I have had many nimh and nicad packs catch on fire or explode from discharging and charging. The details are in the handling and treatment of the cells. ALL batteries must be respected. A good sub-C pack can arc weld, there is no perfectly safe battery.

Allow me to post a picture of a slightly dented 3 cell TP battery that works 100% perfectly still, a few months after the initial uh... dentation.

You really shouldn't be using that anymore EeePee. Although I have a few like that too. The discharge rate gets hurt when they are dented, along with the capacity.

well all of my chargers are lipo capable. i have a few lipos already. i am sold on going lipo, just now a question of where to mount.

in process of building a axial. dont really plan on competing(save that for every other class)

but do i buy the servo battery mount and mount up there on front axle, do i make a mount and put on upper links.

I use it in my plane. Which sees the air maybe once a week if it's not terrible outside. I'm hoping it explodes in mid air.

Really, I am.

I have a flying buddy who has a combat wing who tries to collide with me. He has once which sent the BM6 I'm using straight to the ground from about 50 feet up, or so. Surprisingly the motor still works. I told him he missed the battery! Keep trying!
