old skool bike/chopper kits???

Yeah, I'm hoping through some personal networks I might find one tucked away in a garage and the owner just wanting to get rid of it, that's basically how I found my last bike (Honda CB650). If you ask around and wait long enough, one will pop up.

I got a couple of people that know I'm looking so,they're keeping their eyes open.I'm not in a big hurry.Figure I can wait until the right deal is there. The longer I wait, the more money I'll have to spend.

another option to go, which i have been looking into, is a Buel mutant. there are a couple of decent companies out there making nice buel chopper conversions using frames that a stock Buel/sportster driveline and front forks bolt right up to. it seems that buels with decent running drivelines can be had at motorcycle junkyards relatively cheap, as long as you are just getting it for the driveline.

my personal favorite for conversion kit makers is Bitter End Old School Choppers...

The kikker is a pretty nice kit had one at the shop a while back with ape hangers seemed like a nice kit for what you get.

That Sinister Frame on Ardcore Choppers is real nice looking... off to join the search for a 650

Bad part is they don't make Buells anymore. You guys looking for these Yamahas need to head down south here. We have motorcycles junkyards everywhere here and salvage yards that are loaded with them. One of my good friends has 10+ builds on XS650choppers.com I've helped him on a few of them. They are very easy to build! The most fab work you have to do is the weld on swing arm. Everything else is bolt on. Rebuilding the motors is super easy. There is a couple of places in Atlanta that will build you one turn key starting at $4k.

I noticed they sell turn key 650's for pretty cheap, I looked up how much Ardcore's Bad Penny sold for, $5000. Not too bad, although as you mentioned earlier in the thread, you can build a pretty nice one yourself for well under $3000, in fact just for a challenge (and my wallet), I'm going to try to keep my initial build under $1000. I plan on doing all of the work on mine including the paint, it'll be a fun project. I think I've decided to just get a roller for now and worry about a custom hardtail frame and forward controls a little later in the year. For now, strip it down, powder coat the frame and wheels, repaint the tins, throw on some drag bars, chop the rear end, rebuild and black out the engine and carbs and she'll be good to go. The only thing that will take some moolah is the powdercoating, but there's a local shop that does it and they aren't too bad on their prices.

Does Clymers still make a manual for that engine or can anyone direct me to a good rebuild site?

This thread really makes me want to get my low mile xs650 running. Bought it with a bad CDI box and after spending to much on a few used ones I got frustrated and gave up.

You should be able to get more info here."thumbsup"

Since I gave you the link you better get started on one! Less talk and more building!:flipoff::ror: You can blame me for the link and thank me for the sick bike you will have later!;-) if you need any help down the road let me know. I can also find parts for you down here pretty easy also.

And if or when you need any polishing work done Im all set up for that. I used to have a side business polishing motorcycle parts. I can also chrome for you as well. I can chrome any part needed, plastic, aluminum, medal, iron, ect.... Any color chrome you need! Want some copper parts but don't wana spend the $ that it cost? I can do a chrome dip in a copper color that look just the same!"thumbsup" My brother owns a chroming business.

I love motorcycles as much as RC's! Building them, riding, drag, on and off road! I'll help in any way you need daddy-o"thumbsup"

We went out to a local motorcycle salvage yard yesterday and didn't really find anything promising other than a front mag wheel, lol. The dude had a XS650 with the heads halfway removed, no cam, no pistons, rods, or crankshaft. The chassis was hilarious looking. Someone chopped off the ass end and welded up what looked like metal lawnchair legs for the rear stays. The middle of the top tube was completely gone, not sure what happened there. The only thing that looked good was the front wheel and I just didn't want to screw with it. I asked him if he just had any bare engines laying around that were in somewhat complete form along with maybe a set of the original mag wheels, he just motioned right slow to a literal 10 foot high pile of old engines and said, "There may be one in there somewhere if you want to dig through all them ole engines". I had an old CB650 chassis, wheels, and partial engine to trade if he had anything decent, but it wasn't going to happen with what he had.

If I can't find anything halfway decent with the XS650's anytime soon, the wife and I are just thinking about waiting till the fall and picking up a used Busa, ZX12 or 14. There are plenty around here that are in great shape for less than 7 grand, some modded, some not. Most of the big litre bikes are taken care of around here, you see more of the 600's and 750's wrapped around trees than Busa's. Although that's usually attributed to the people that buy them (most anyways) have enough sense and respect for them to keep them out of trouble. We'd like to pick up a nice one with a few thousand miles on it, stretch it, polish the frame, chrome the wheels, bag the rear end and maybe a custom paint job if I'm feeling frisky.

That first listing is exactly what I'm looking for around here. I figure one will pop up eventually but I don't like waiting, lol. Oh well...I at least got this CB650 chassis and wheels sitting here...I could get another motor for it and chop it up, just don't want to go with another inline 4, too much crap to mess with/up.

Tell me your budget and I'll find you one here. Your not that far away from me really. It would be a easy day trip for ya. Or if you want me to just find you a motor I can do that as well. Even build it for ya"thumbsup"

Yeah, I was just a couple hours from Augusta last week. Ideally, I'd like to get a late 79-82 roller for $500 or less. Doesn't have to run but at least have the complete engine, carbs, chassis, tins, and wheels (preferably the aluminum mags). Basically one that's been neglected and needs to be cleaned/tuned up. I can do all the rebuild and cleanup on my own, throw in a new timing chain, gaskets, and rebuild the carbs then do some other mods to give the stock chassis some style until I can get around to ordering a flying w chassis from Ardcore and a sporty tank. This would be pretty much verbatim as far as what I would like to find.

Thanks for the help. "thumbsup"

BTW, thanks to your "New Toy" thread, you have the wife and I looking at Busa's. I've been on Roaring Toyz site all night looking at stretch kits, lol. Worst part about one will be the insurance. Most places around here will insure them just fine, but none of them are cheap...makes insuring a 650 look like chump change, lol.

I'll start looking for you daddy-o"thumbsup" And insurance on my Busa for full coverage, road side, extra parts coverage, ect... is $450 every 6 months"thumbsup" Thats with State Farm. I was with Geico and it was a little over $700 every 6 months! Thank God I was only with them for a week before I switched to State Farm! It was a kick in the but from my Honda 954RR I just sold though. The 954 was a 2002 and was only $44 a month for full coverage! Keep in mind I have a perfectly clean driving history to.

But out of all the bikes I've owned the Busa is hands down the best so far"thumbsup" You wouldn't think that a bike this big would handle that well but it really does! Even with the swing arm extended 6" it handles like it's not extended at all! And speed.....well it has more then you could ever need! Unless your going to drag race like mine don't put the stroker kit that I did on mine on yours! I can break the rearend loose in 5th at 130 with no clutch! Thats on a 190 rear tire! I'm going to have to put a wheelie bar on for the track. It won't stay down through 3rd at all. Now that is getting on it to though. Riding on the street I dial the Power Commander down and it fine"thumbsup"

But if you stay with a stock Busa you can't go wrong at all"thumbsup" The 09's and up are sick to! You have a switch on the bars that has 3 modes for riding. You can switch to "wet" mode, "drag" mode, ect...... Traction control at your finger tips!"thumbsup" They also hold there value great! He'll, the 04-07's are still selling for $8-11K with minor mods! And as far as comfort goes I give it a "A"! The seat is nice and wide but looks good. Remember that this bike was designed as a touring bike really. It has been great when I rode it for 2-3 hours. I wouldn't hesitate to ride it 500-700 miles with breaks on the way! They make some nice hard bags for them! Throw those and a tank bag on with a rear seat luggage rack and you could ride coast to coast!

The gas milage is awesome! Your odometer also gives you a milage rating for trip 1 and trip 2 and a overall average. I'm getting right at 31mpg in the city! So your looking at about 150-160 miles on a tank! I think you could get 200 on the highway maybe! They are just killer bikes all around"thumbsup" The only other bike that can compare would be the Kawasaki ZX1400. I just don't think they look as good as the Suzuki, but they are FAST!!!

So go get your Busa!!!! Blame it on me"thumbsup":ror:

I had Geico on my old bike and at the time they were the lowest I could find. Now we're with Progressive for our car insurance and they are the lowest for our car and truck, but sky high for motorcycle insurance...go figure. I'm hoping a Busa won't be too horribly bad with the right company, as both the wife and I have perfect driving records/histories with no tickets or accidents...not to mention I'm 28 and married. I'm going to check a few quotes this week and chime back in on that, lol.

The speed is nice, but I'm really looking at them for the overall bike size and torque. Both the wife and I are amazon people, so we want a bigger bike that can still haul ass with both of us on board. I'm just looking at around a 4" extension, probably a bolt on for now until we can get the moolah for a 240 rear conversion with the extended swingarm. I think it'll be pretty trick with a 240 rear end, 6" extended and bagged...but that'll be a while.

A power commander will be the first thing that goes on it if it doesn't already come with one. I like the custom maps for different riding as well as being able to dial it down at times. The bike probably will probably never see a track, but we'll be spending plenty of time around Deals Gap and a few other twisties.

I had wondered about the whole touring part. I've seen several Busa's with bags and talked to the riders to see how far they usually ride and was pretty impressed. It will be perfect for us as far as that's concerned as we like to avoid trailering whenever possible, I guess I'm a bit of a purist, lol.

I like the ZX14's, but they do not look as good as the Busa's, they do have some impressive torque though (as they should, lol). I can find the 99-2005 year models for less than 7 grand all day, so they're well within reach. I'm just afraid of how much I'll spend once I actually get one, lol.

Well,patience pays off.I just picked up an '81 XS650 today.8)
Ended up paying $900 but, around here, that's a pretty good deal. Now I have something to ride this summer and my project for the winter."thumbsup"
Here's a couple of pics from my brothers phone.
