I do have a few castle links in stock.

From what I was told, they dropped the BEC rating because
1. They were redoing the entire board layout anyway for the new software
2. the 18th scale cars didn't need so much bec (the real market for the mamba 25)
3. The new board layout didnt have enough room to easily fit the 3 amp bec

I have been putting a bug in castle's ear about releasing external voltage regs. They have made them for projects, but havent decided if they will produce them. They are TINY little 3A switching regs, about the size of raisen. They are also pretty cheap to produce as well. I am all for the koolflight UBEC's, but they cost almost $40. I don't know about you, but I dont want to spend $40 more on all my brushless rigs just to get the servos working. Might as well spend the 40 extra on a 'bot servo and run it on 6 cells and loose the regulator.

I've did some quick research on brushless speedos but there's nothing really out there that's reasonably priced. I wanna keep the weight down as much as possible and running an rx pack or voltage regulator (unless it's one like you described) is just more weight and more junk that I gotta find a place for. That Mamba Max shows some potential if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

From what I have read elsewhere, you can run two of these in parallel (or is it series) to increase the amps. I'm still looking for the specs on my servo to see what it's operating amerpage range is. It's a JR 590M incase anyone happens to have the specs handy.

The mamba maxx is gonna be a huge chunk (comparitively). You will still save weight going with a voltage reg and mamba 25, as the 25er doesnt have a heatsink.

gone_wheelin, thanks for the link. That's another good thread. I stumbled across the link for the Novak regulator which I recall someone mentioning in this thread as well. Completely forgot about that. I might go that route then.

I can get them, but it would take a while. Novak hasnt really done too well with those (most people that run nitro dont want a reciever pack and a reg too). I know I wouldnt worry about one on my nitro.

I am thinking about a solution to the whole BEC problem. One way- run a brushless motor that does well on 5 cells.

On a totally different note, I'm seeing a lot of 6-pole helicopter motors now. Most of them spin around 2000 KV, and should have plenty of torque. They'd need an adapter, as they're 400-480 size inrunners. Amp draw will be a problem for Mamba users, as most of them go well over 25A under full load. But there are some new speedos out there as well.

For those guys who want a little more wheelspeed, one of these heli motors might be worth looking into if you have a speedo that can take the amp draw.

I finally got a chance to use the CastleLink with my Mamba and damn, that is cool as hell. I set the throttle curve on my CompX kit in my 18T and was able to drive it around the house without it tearing off like a bat out of hell into the walls. Can't wait to get my next crawler project completed so I can play with it somemore. BTW, the newest firmware v1.04 has a bunch more settings you can control.

JRH: I can't find any specs on my JR 590M servo in regards to amperage, would you happen to know if it will function well at 1 amp? The only spec I can find is the speed and torque ratings for 6v. I am going to build the VReg from link I placed above but don't know if the 1a will do the job.

The 590M should run just fine on the Stock mamba 25 BEC.


I have looked at those 6 pole inrunners. I have a couple of 4 pole inrunners that I have yet to try too. They are pretty expensive though.

Doh! The 590M is being used for rear steer with a HS5645 for the front steer. From what I have read here the Mamba 25's BEC wont be able to support both.

yeah, I wouldnt try to push both servos through the stock BEC.

Even the 5645 by itself is pushing it. The digitals tend to draw more amps just for processing and centering.

I was reading the specs for the 5645 and they list specs for 4.8v and 6v. I'll probably do the 5 cell tap to power both servos for now.

anyone recommend a brushless outrunner with a 2.3mm diameter shaft? enough power to push a 5lb shafty PTI rig?

JRB--- my one complaint of the MP JET is that FAT 5mm shaft. smallest physically possible pinion is 13t. (48 pitch/.5 modules). and after enjoying the 'slowness' of a clod with 55lathe and 8t pinions... i want to slow my PTI down more too. its just geared too high for my taste with the 13t. i'm running a 96 spur--- its big as i can find and already a little too big for the tranny case-- but it works. so the only way i can think to gear down more w/out getting crazy with a gearbox and whatnot---- is pinion or motor Kv rating.

so i want to find a low Kv outrunner with 2.3 shaft and 1000kv or less. that will easily allow an 8 or 9t pinion and should get me closer to the gearing i like.

I think you want a 3.2mm (or 1/8 inch) shaft, right? If that's the case, the Axi 2212/26 or the E-Flite Park 400 (either the 920KV or 740KV) will do the trick for you. Or JRH probably has couple others up his sleeve

yeah, no actually i was looking for a 2.3mm shaft. i'm guessing there's not a wide market for them in outrunner style brushless. there a good handful of brushless motor available for the micro heli's with this smaller shaft size of 2.3mm. allowing as small as 8tooth pinion in 48 pitch or .5 modules. although--- maybe in brushless outrunner it wouldn't be a great idea--- due to the torque forces, i suppose you run a REAL risk of snapping output shafts when its that small shaft diameter. i've heard of shafts being snapped in the heli applications when using the 2.3mm. and thats a low 'impact-torque', rpm-intensive type of application.

but yes i think you've got the right idea... i was just searching on hobby-lobby and found this one---

AXI Silver 2212/34 its got 3.17mm shaft that i could fit go as small as 10tooth pinion- .5 modules---- and the PLUS is that its only 690Kv.

i would hazard a guess thats similar in gearing or at least in the ballpark with an 8tooth pinion at 1000kv, all else being equal ?

and the great part is that its on sale for $41 bones--- not too shabby at all! :mrgreen:


now the 34 is lower Kv, and shows it will support 9amps/60 seconds, vs the 26 that is 880Kv and supports 11amps/60 seconds. being that i want the Kv as LOW as possible for gearing purposes--- you think the 34 will still get the job done in the power dept?

the MP Jet 28/10-13 that i'm using now is obviously quite a bit more powerful... but honestly it had WAY more power than was really necessary to move this rig. and despite that i'll move to a less powerful motor, it will be geared lower and thus shouldn't need to be as powerful.

I haven't tried the Axi silvers, but I'd guess they're a tick less powerful than the golds. The golds, however, are so bullishly torquey that you won't miss the extra power. I know the E-Flite Park 400, supposedly much less motor than the Axi, works well enough (per Skippy), so the Axi silver ought to work just fine.

For that matter, just about anything in the 9-12 amp range ought to work. Less than 9 amps will probably stall more than you'd like, though.

I'd watch out for the 2.3mm shaft. They're fine for aircraft, but aircraft don't get their tires wedged in rocks ;-)
