I want to paint my Traxxas rustler wheels and I want to now if I have to prep the wheel in any way to get the paint to stick good.

my $.02

The best way that I can think of would be to scuff up the wheels, and use a auto paint that is ment for rims. (There is a paint made by I think krylon that is ment for 1:1 rims) it would most likley work best for chipping.

But if they dont have your color then just scuff it up good, put the paint down and put a clear coat on it and that should help.

Wash and scuff that should help any paint.

Or if you can dye the rims thats even better

TQ

Just my $.02

If the rims are a nylon ( I think ) (Prolines basic white dish rims are the dyeing material)

Use rits dye, most fabric stores or craft stores will have it. You can mix colors to get your desired color then follow the direction on the box, if I remember your bring the water and dye to a boil then dip the wheels into the dy, leave them in to get the desired color then let dry.

I would suggest using a fishing line to put in the wheels and pull them out that a way there is no smudges on the wheel.

TQ

Just dyed my rims with rit dye I purchased a the local grocery store.

Follow the directions on the box. I brought it to a rolling boil added the color and let them set in it for 45 minutes (just to make sure). Take em out and rinse them off. dry and done

Best way to paint them is to scuff up the wheels, and use a lacquer based (not enamel) paint. However, I'd recommend the Rit dye method...liquid or powder works great, wont chip/scrape off easily and no drying time. Just remember that when you're dying them, they get darker (not brighter!) the longer you leave them in. You can always put them in again (same color or different color for effects) to make them darker. Only takes a couple minutes...45 minutes is probably as dark they will ever get. I do mine with a screen strainer so the parts don't sit on the bottom of the pan...they can melt or get distorted...keep a close eye on them. Dip them in for a minute, pull em out and check...if you want darker...dip em for a bit more.

I get my GF to dye all of my wheels. It's as easy as boiling water! Here's a pic of my rig with dyed rims.

If your wheels are chrome you might have to take it off first before dying them I would do it before painting them too. It's really easy just use some oven cleaner.
