Post-apocalyptic power wagon rock crawler build

Starting with the salt. I'm not trying to do a lot of weathering, so only a little salt.

It's looking great.....and I don't want to rain on your parade....but....your should be using Tamiya PS paint, not TS. PS is made for Lexan. Hopefully the TS paint won't flake off too soon.

Ah man, that is kinda lame news! I guess I didn't read into it enough.

Maybe I can strip it and start over :(

Perhaps just Go with it. The post apocalyptic rig might very well have chipping and peeling paint.

I think I will go for it. I may order a can of flat PS clear coat to toss over it. Looking through the Tamiya chart, they don't have a NATO green PS paint anyway.

Yeah i just went back and looked at page one... biggest clue its the wrong stuff is ps paints dont really have names, not military ones anyway.

Where did you get the paint? Hobby shop kinda should have suggested ps if they cared about thier customers. Really sucks man you put a lot of work and prep into that. Hopefully you can save it!

The LHS I go to carries plenty of the right paint, but they didn't have any in the flat colors I was looking for. The rest I ordered on Amazon, and I didn't do the proper research first. Oh well, I'll pick up another Power Wagon body as a backup to do if this one starts to really look terrible.

On with the project!

First steps into the weathering are complete, as well application of my custom decals. Once the paint hardens I will begin the rest if the weathering and start applying finishing touches.

Was gone In Japan for a few weeks and so didn't get a lot done until this week. Going to Proline by the Fire this weekend, and plan on bringing both my Twin Hammer and the ascender power wagon. I don't have a trailer yet, but the power wagon should be good to go by then. All the electronics are in and set up for initial testing. Factory servo is replaced with an older savox out of my MOA rig, should so fine for the PLBTF. My last one gave me about 60 hours of use, and this one is only at maybe 6 hours. Will replace with a savox 1230 soon, like I run in the TH.

Got my wertmade boar bumper installed, and did some minor effects to the frame. Eventually I plan to tear the whole truck down and paint the frame, cover the electronics, and do some better wiring and details. But to get it drivable for PLBTF I had to just finish it.

Tell ya what, this wertymade bumper is amazing.

Going to fasten it all together and take it for a test run tomorrow, will snap some photos.

Not 100% yet but done enough that I'll start taking it out crawling! It is definitely not perfect, and I learned a lot with this truck. I will have to repaint the whole thing, the paint has already cracked and flaked around the lights when I was installing them. Oh well, I'll trash it at PLBTF and redo it later.

Definitely no concourse truck!

Thanks. I still need a little apocalyptic flavor to it. I'm thinking of using some left over panels to build some armor plates for the windows, and wrapping the bumper and roll bars in barbed wire. As it is, the only apocalyptic part is the brotherhood of steel logo on the hood.

I toyed with painting the cage desert tan as well, as well as the entire truck.

i think it looks GREAT! i love the extra stuff on the bed. and the figures really sell it!
oh and i highly recommend watching imthatguy's youtube tutorial on weathering your RC. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2Vr7MIAWBs

but i know what you mean, "good enough to drive it" haha my ford is really getting down to the wire, still need a bunch done before i head to san marcos tonight and leave for apple valley from there.

Well, back from Proline By The Fire 2018! The Power Wagon build got a lot of positive attention! It also got a lot of wheel time. Sure enough, the paint didn't hold up and it's completely trashed! But that's ok. I spent some time talking with Buck from "Buck's Customs" about building post-apocalyptic rigs, which is his specialty. Got some tips for doing external paint that will hold up on lexan bodies. Time to strip everything off (really there isn't much left) and paint it all over again!

Another thing I noticed is that the fenders and lights get hung on on EVERYTHING! So much so that after only a few hours of crawling, the fenders are already cracking where they meet the body on the front. I've got two options here. One is cut them off and go pure rock crawler look, as seen below, or get a custom bumper which protects the front of the fenders. I do want to do a custom cage eventually anyway, so we'll see.
