R.E.C.O.N. G6 Challenge "The Gooey Duck 300" at Long Beach, WA

We had such a great time!!! I love getting to spend time with my PNW RECON brothers! Getting to see peoples faces when they crossed the finish line on a stage at the G6 was priceless! Watching people run the new comp formats was worth the 11 hour drive! My son Cole and I judged the "multi-lap" course and saw smiles from ear to ear on every driver. That's what its all about, having fun with friends and driving your toy truck.

This event was outstanding. I was late getting there I had forgot my map at home but these guys signed me right up and I met my stage buddy and they lined my Blazer (Cozen Eddy up at the start. Luckily my stage buddy had seen a bit of the course, he kept me and Cozen Eddy pointed in the right direction up the loose dirt and rock hill climb down to the gate 10 to 15 reverse gates and on to the mud challenge and all the way back to the start to the leaf spring challenge and that was just the first 50 gate course. On the 100 gate there were a lot of great rock hill climes, straight up and down and steep drop offs, under shrubs that I couldn't see where I was going, then down rock face right next to the crashing waves on the beach I was sure I was going to roll right in several times but kept my cool and crawled right down to the sand of the rocks and in between waves made it through a couple gates and then back up on the rock again. Some where in there I had to make a full pull on a stuck Press Hummer. Oh and I forgot to mention this was when it was getting dark out using the lights on my rig to find the way.

Thank you Axial for this awesome event I wish I could have made it to the other two stages on Sunday.

The RECON G6 train rolled out of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="on">Reno</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">NV</st1:State> headed to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Long Beach</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">Washington</st1:State></st1:place>, which has played host to the Axial West Coast Championship Qualifier for two years straight and it is one of my favorite places to comp at. The G6 Crew was stoked about hosting a G6 here. The adrenaline was high and the with the official energy drink of the G6, Rockstar, we were ready to get our scaler fix in another RECON G6

This year, in addition to the AWCC Qualifier that was hosted by ORCRC, WARCRC, and WPPRCA, R.E.C.O.N. Crawlers and North West Scale R/C held a RECON G6 Challenge. What is a RECON G6 Challenge? The t-shirt reads “anything Parker wants it to be”, but in actuality, a G6 is any scalers fix for driving fun.

The “Gooey Duck 300” was the name of this G6 Challenge and unfortunately I still have not seen a Gooey Duck, let alone find one to drive over. I did find to crab shells and utilized them in true G6 fashion. The Gooey Duck 300 featured 4 stages. Two of the stages were run at night and the other two the following morning. Two of the stages were main stages; 100 or more trail markers. The other two were sub stages, 50 trail markers. The night stages featured sand, rock, water (fresh and salt), sand, mud, and the ever present sand.

Drivers began tech at Axial G-Central tent and their scalers were either placed in the Vanquish Products Start Alley or immediately placed in the TCS Impound lot. Chasinbaja sets up and runs G-Central. His hard work is show cased every time a driver lights the lipos on the Poly Performance start line. Drivers and stage buddies introduced themselves and prepared to pop their G6 cherries. After drivers meeting and the National Anthem, drivers started side by side, two at a time, down the lighted VP start alley. Oh my, the Gooey Duck 300 is under way.

As drivers disappeared into the night driving some of the coolest scalers, I was holding down the scoring and mic duties. RECON’s own Spucknit and scoring extraordinaire missed the G-Train, but was there in spirit, well ok, sprint and with the help of Rokpile, the night G6 stages was a blast.

A special “Thank You” to Rocky, aka Rokpile, he hooked us up with power for the night stages and the sickest scale license plates I’ve ever seen. Stage 2 featured the Axial Press Hummer recovery time bonus. This time bonus was in honor and memory of Rockys little sister who lost her fight with breast cancer. To know Rocky is to love Rocky and Rocky, we all love you. Thank you, again.

The G6 is driver friendly and two of the most talented drivers that have ever completed a G6 Stage; Gauge and Gunner Ripplinger. Gauge and Gunner helped us set up stage 1. Unibomber and I learned a lot from Gauge and Gunner. Their youthful outlook and no fear of clear dirt, (water), because “Dad” will fix it attitude gave me all the confidence that I needed make drivers go through all the water and mud that Gauge and Gunner could find. Dad, aka John Ripplinger, was just an impressive stage buddy; running both night stages twice! Gunner schooled the leaf spring skill section that left several drivers high centered and using a penalty winch to the finish line.

North West Scale R/C’s own husband and wife duo, Larry and Rose Lawther proves that a family that scales together; drives awesome. Rose can flat drive and I was glad to meet her. Larry is not too shabby of a driver himself, but I bet I know who has more speeding tickets!

3 other drivers did an amazing job driving that put them on the podium. Congratulations to third place, James Russel. Second place honors goes to Axial driver Ryan Gerrish. The man who not only drove flawlessly for 300 trail markers, but did so with some Swanson Swagger, Rob Hartloff, took first place and joins the elite alumni of G6 Winners.

An honorable mention goes out to the best 2.2 scale finisher, Trenton Becker. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Trenton</st1:place></st1:City> posted the third fasted overall time and drove his custom Hummer very well.

The G-Degree went to; it’s not lamb, but Veal, Jason Veal. Jason is a talented driver and no stranger behind the wheel of a 1:1. In fact he has been to the Easter Jeep Safari 9 yrs straight and his knowledge of lines is very impressive. Jason was winning after the night stage, but DNF’d a stage on Sunday morning which took him off the podium.

Just when I thought we could not have anymore fun, the tide came in Saturday night. We scrambled to load up and Rocky stayed behind to ensure we had no issues getting off the beach, but it took the <st1:place w:st="on">Pacific Ocean</st1:place> to stop White Lightning. Chasinbaja, Unibomber, Jason Veal, and myself was flat getting it in the loaming sand and made short work of the first water crossing. The second water crossing was reportedly 15 inches deep and getting deeper by the minute, but White Lightning is used to being wheeled at the Moon Rocks while trailoring two porta potties and a little salt water aint stopping her. A LOT of salt water stopped her. If fact, hydro locked the motor and it sounded like she through a rod! Dead in the water, with knee high swells relentlessly rolling in, Ryan Gerrish, Axial Team Driver and teammate came to the rescue.

Ryan is into some serious 1:1 toys and has a vast knowledge of off road tactics. To put the situation into perspective, Ryan has backed through the river crossing and we have hooked up White Lightening, who is dead wait and not restarting. Ryan was able to get us across the river and temporally out of harms way.

A HUGE THANK YOU to the official G-Train mechanic and another 1:1 guru, Kenny Shamblin. Kenny jumped under the hood of White Lightening and in no time, White Lightening burped a fire ball and started up. Kenny had us under our own power, but we needed more pulling power since Ryan and I was both stuck now.

Enter Mike, SMR4RUNNER. Mike and Kenny had been helping others get out and when we did not show up, out they came. After Kenny got White Lightening running, Mike strapped to Ryan’s Ford, who I was strapped to and we proceeded to daisy chain our way down the beach dodging drift wood and waves that rivaled the ending of Point Break.

I can’t thank you all enough. That was one of the best recoveries that I have ever been a part of. I now have a new respect for Mother Nature and I’ve learned a lot about the ocean life and tide charts. One I like to eat, the other I use to clean my ass with after I eat the one I like.

glad to see you pacific north westers got G6'ed. sounds like Parker did it to ya right. bummed i missed this one but hope to see some of you at AWCC
 
Hey that was me with the burning scaler!

This event was flat out awesome! I wish I could make it to more, but definetly the most fun I've had with my honcho.
