Aluminum racing seat DIY
I may have seen this somewhere I do not think I came up with it on my own
this is a pile of pictures and some may seam un needed but it is a step by step
You will need some things
1 sheet of 8x10 paper
2 calipers
3 #14 AWG wire color your choice
4 a driver (action figure)
5 thin aluminum sheet (flashing from hardware store I am using a reflector from an industrial light it was bent already)
6 foam sheets (color your choice)
7 a zip strap
8 a number of alligator clips
9 some kind of glue (I used ca glue)
So step by step
Take the piece of paper fold in half
Fold in half again
Unfold it and flatten it out on a hard surface this is a center 2 direction this becomes clear soon
Now take the calipers and measure from figures butt to the shoulders
Mark that measurement on the paper from the center up 2 places
With the calipers measure from the neck to the top of the head
Mark this measurement on the paper in 2 places this is the height of the head rest
Now measure with the figure in a seated position from the back of the knee to the back
Mark this measurement on the paper in two places this is the bottom of the seat
you now should have this
now draw lines to get a line for each set of measurements
So now there is some math involved
Measure across the figures shoulders
write the measurement down in this case I get 50.29 mm divide this by 2 = 25.145 this we mark at the top of the seat back
Now measure the figures hips I get 36.64 divide by2=18.32 mark this on the paper
Draw a line from the mark at the top of the back to the bottom
Measure the distance of the figure across the knees
31.52 mm divide by 2 = 15.76mark this on the paper at the front of the seat bottom
Draw a line from the back to the front of the bottom
Measure the figures head
16.94 mm divide by 2 = 8.47 mark that on the paper at the top of the head rest
So now you get to be a little creative draw an s shape form the head width to the shoulder width
Then you need to make a line like a camels hump from the shoulder width to the hip width
Now a line from the hip width then from the same height as the line you just drew little confusing but the picture shows it better
Now you have half a pattern for the seat now cut it out
Fold it over and trace it out
fold on the line then trace the line
Then cut the other side out
Now you have a whole pattern for the seat
now trace one or two on to the aluminum that depends on weather you got a buggy or a truck
cut the pattern out of the aluminum
bend 45 on the lines
bend the back
you need to cut three holes in the seat 2 in the back 1 in the bottom
now fold the pattern so you have only the center an lay it on the foam sheet for the center of the back and bottom
that is it for now
trace this shape on to the foam
now cut out the shape if you are doing a pair of seats cut 2 of these pieces
now the other color I did a 2 tone as I said earlier your choice. any way take the pattern and fold it over the edge trace out the camels hump
2 per seat
then fold the pattern over and do the bottom side bolsters 2 per seat
now cut out all the pieces
here is what you get
now coat the bottom of the seat in glue and attach the foam to it center and the side bolsters you need to leave a little edge without the foam so the edging will go on
I have no picture for this part but it is self explanatory with a razor knife carefully cut the pvc of the #14AWG wire and remove the copper wire do not throw this stuff away it is useful for tow rope and other things
now coat the edge of the bolsters and slide the pvc edging on see picture use three alligator clips to clamp it in place
and here is the driver with the seat
hope this is a help I realize it was along one but it is kind of a tough one to describe
coat the back in glue and stick the foam in place coat the edge and install the edging hold it in place with a zip-tye and some alligator clips
leave it for 15 minutes have a coffee
now remove all the clamping stuff
coat the camel humps in glue and install the foam and cut out the three holes these are for your seat belts to feed through
and there it is one seat if you take your time I am sure yours will look better than mine
with the driver
